French Dirt May Kill MRSA
Research Teams Study Ancient Practice

Researchers said that a type of French clay can kill several disease-causing bacteria, including M. ulcerans, which is known as a "flesh-eating" bacteria, and the so-called super bug, MRSA.

"There are very compelling reports of clay treating infections, but that's anecdotal evidence, not science," said Lynda Williams of Arizona State University.

Williams is coordinating three research teams looking into the millennia-old practice of using clay to heal wounds, soothe indigestion and kill intestinal worms.

"We're beginning to generate the first scientific evidence of why some minerals might kill bacterial organisms and others might not," said Williams.

A news release said other laboratory tests have shown that clay can kill E. coli.

1. Three cheers for Freedom Dirt (TM)!
This enthusiastic subject line brought to you by Novartis, who will own the distribution rights in the US.

So now when American tourists board their departing flights from de Gaulle, they'll be required to take off their shoes, and they'll never get them back.

3. That was from "suction," if memory serves
Basically, you put clay over a wasp sting or a boil. As the surface of the clay dries, it pulls moisture from inside, which in turn pulls the venom or infection out of the skin. If you can heat the clay, all the better; the warmth will open the skin's pores as well as cause faster drying, both of which help speed the process.

It is also possible that this clay in particular carries bacteriophages that target this particular bacteria. With more and more bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics, phages are again getting a lot of attention as an alternative.
