the holy roller fundamentalists, the deterioration of the school system, the lies and incompetence from a corrupt government, the body bags, the greed, the plastic fantastic culture, moronic talk radio,
and spineless Democrats.

If I were there, and could, I would try to pack up and leave. There are alternatives to the American dream or living in filth and poverty.

Isn't there a happy medium?

to try to make a decent life in the States and get caught up in greed and plastic culture.

There are alternatives to the American dream orliving in filth and poverty. I hope I cleared up that point. My mistake.

5. Not any more fucked up than Clinton's endorsement by bigot Harold Mayberry
But it's only a problem when Obama does it, right?

7. Confronting, not courting
Which is more than any candidate does when they actually do court the catholic vote.

16. Yes. Really.
Regardless of what you think, the vast majority of Americans are some of the most culturally aware and diverse people in the world. PERIOD.

That is why we are willing to fight for our country rather than picking up and leaving.

Peace.

10. This is MY country
I'll fight to the death before I would consider leaving - what a presumptuous idea. With all of its faults, I love this country and have no desire to live anywhere else.

But perhaps I'm wearing rose colored classes - I'm sure some helpful DUer will be along to knock them off my head.

You aren't wearing rose colored glasses. You are just wise enough to realize that Real America is next door to you and not in DC.

14. America affects the world.
It's true that in some countries I might have a more peaceful life, and equal protection under the law. But my question is then always: for how long?

It's like being in a house on fire and simply retreating to a room that's not yet burning.

17. May I suggest to you the long-awaited tome from Joe Bageant. . .
otherwise touted as the poor-man's Hunter Thompson:
Deer Hunting With Jesus - Dispatches From America's Class War
http://www.amazon.com/Deer-Hunting-Jesus-Dispatches-Americas/dp/030733936X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-3362323-1628715?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1193416072&sr=1-1

Here is one who grew up among red-necks and other assorted folks many of us call "white trash"
He has an understanding of why these folks put up with what you just mentioned.
He's got a great website as well:
www.joebageant.com

If you want to know where these folks come from, I cannot recommend Mr. Bageant highly enough.

:wow:

"Isn't there a happy medium?"
Sure there is-- but it takes both dialog and patience... and many, many other things for which I have neither the question, nor the answer.

Some of us feel we have the opportunity to change things for the better, but we don't believe it will happen in a dramatic fashion with a nice soundtrack playing when the credits begin to roll at the feel-good ending. It's a constant struggle against frustration, hubris and despair. And for every success, there's bound to be failure.

If there's an inhabited place on this planet where frustration and despair are things of the past, perfection reigns and idealism is law, I'd love to hear about it-- but I doubt there is such a place. Everyone on this planet with a conscious struggles to make their country and their world a better place, the differences are only in degrees.

and others here too I think feel the same way. No matter how bad it gets, this country belongs to us,and we are not giving up. Not to fuckheads like the republicans and their various sub gangs.

22. I actually do think about that a lot -- but we have family here.
My husband and kids and I have managed to carve out a nice little niche (or maybe it's a bubble) in Portland, which is a liberal and livable city (people think it's a little more "European" than most other U.S. cities). We don't really have to deal with the psychochristians, etc. I don't tune into talk radio. The radio in the car is tuned to a liberal station, or music. Fox News is programmed off of my TV. My kids' public school is actually quite good (a rare exception for an urban public school). We don't buy into the whole consumer culture crap (although, I must admit, I got an iPod as a gift and I LOVE it). Iraq I have to deal with by not watching news coverage -- it makes me crazy and I'm helpless to stop it (Yes, I marched against it, called Congresspeople, wrote letters to the editor, etc. ---> of course to no avail). I'm on DU a lot to be with like-minded people. Yes, I guess I cope by living in a bubble.

24. shame them. and i do it often. because really
(being a christian myself) all that they are protesting, and throwing tantrums over has contradictions in the bible and it is not hard for me to time and time again, take them from the old testament to the new testament and christs words.
