3. I'm a Yankee lover, but there is justice after all.
This Colorado Rockie crap of quietly hiring only born again Christians just creeped me out. Begrudging congrats to Red Sox Nation, which resides in the Yankee Universe.

because apparently enough people need it to justify the omnipresent east coast sports bias.

28. Did you read the link from that post?
Edited on Mon Oct-29-07 12:41 AM by rockymountaindem
Evidently someone at bleacherreport can't read. I'll do the hard work for them:

“There are guys who are religious, sure, but they don’t impress it upon anybody,” Hirsh said. “It’s not like they hung a cross in my locker or anything. They’ve accepted me for who I am and what I believe in.”

“Do we like players with character? There is absolutely no doubt about that,” O’Dowd said during a recent interview in his Coors Field office. “If people want to interpret character as a religious-based issue because it appears many times in the Bible, that’s their decision. I believe that character is an innate part of developing an organization, and to me, it is nothing more than doing the right thing at the right time when nobody’s looking. Nothing more complicated than that.

“You don’t have to be a Christian to make that decision.”

“Certain guys attend chapel, certain guys don’t,” outfielder Cory Sullivan said. “I don’t think that’s any different from how it is in any other major league clubhouse. Nothing’s shoved down your throats.”

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/23/sports/baseball/23rockies.html?_r=2&em&ex=1193284800&en=6df5a61b1554d009&ei=5087%0A&oref=slogin&oref=slogin

If fellow Jew-Crew member Jason Hirch feels comfortable with it, then I'm comfortable with it. I'm not gonna tell people they shouldn't have prayer meetings in their spare time on their own volition. That's obviously none of my business. Besides, if it helps the guys on my team feel more relaxed and play better, then good for them.

So to conclude, your own source is an idiot and his link undercuts the argument you're trying to make. Steee-rike!

7. So I heard these Rockies players were recruted because they were Christian

I don't have a problem with Jesus and most Christians, but this kind of crap turned me against the Rockies as soon as I heard about it. I was born in Denver and was all for the Rockies until I heard about the "Christian" recruiting crap.

Glad to hear they lost!

22. You Heard Wrong
and if it was true, God wasn't answering their prayers - he was answering Curt Shilling prayers because like Bush, Shilling is a born again fundy, Iraq war lover.

Schilling can't stop shilling
Red Sox right-hander gets political after leading Red Sox to title

Apparently Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling thinks that blowing an 86-year-old hex to smithereens makes him an instant expert even on complex, non-baseball-related matters. Either that or he stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

After helping to lead Boston to its first World Series title since 1918, Schilling suddenly feels politically astute enough to tell us all who our next president should be. Appearing on ABC's Good Morning America the day after the Sox wrapped up the championship, he surprised interviewer Charlie Gibson at the end of the segment by saying, "And make sure you tell everybody to vote, and vote Bush next week."http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/writers/phil_tayl...

Like the president, Schilling is a born-again Christian, and he has been supportive of the US war effort in Iraq.

The son of a career soldier, Schilling is a military enthusiast, an expert in military strategy games, and a student of military history, especially World War II. He has a collection that includes the beret worn by British field marshal Bernard Montgomery during the North Africa campaign and a small vehicle used by the German army to clear minefields, according to a 2001 profile of the pitcher in USA Today.http://www.attytood.com/2007/01/the_next_kerry_swift_bo...

14. Nope.
See my other post. Also click on any link that will show the Rockies all time roster since 2000. Plenty of Catholics, Asians and even a Jew on there. So you can rant and rave all you want, but it's really easy to shoot that argument down. Just look at the roster.

Read an actual article.

prayer nights, a full-time chaplin on the roster, etc.

No ever said they only hire Christians -- hell, the Bush White House employs some *landsmen*.

But actually read up on your Rockies. if you dare.

19. I've already read those articles
The Red Sox have a team chaplain too. There's an organization that provides chaplains to every major league team. In fact, a couple of years ago they were supposedly the most observant team in the league:

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2005/08/31/faith_binds_many_on_sox/

Doesn't bother me. I'm not going to abandon the Sox as my favorite AL team. I'm not looking to pro athletes as inspiration for my life, or as spiritual guides or anything like that. They're not authority figures. For all I know they're all total idiots who couldn't get through the day without the manager telling them to tie up the cleats. Doesn't matter to me. I'm a fan because I like the game and you gotta side with someone or it's not interesting.

Claiming the moral high ground in a sporting competition over religion is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen, and it's blatantly obvious that certain Red Sox fans are engaging in this slander of the Rockies as a means of perpetuating the underdog status they've become accustomed to despite the fact they're the overwhelming favorites. Sorry you're not getting the pity cheers anymore, RSN, but don't make up fake (or at least hypocritical) reasons to hate on the underdog just because they've usurped your underdog status. That's totally asinine.

25. I'm not RSN, which may explain your unwarranted umbrage toward me. However,
I've read enough about the Rockies to know their front office does push a certain "party line," and whether it's a team doing it -- or a pitcher like Schilling -- or a President whose supposed to represent *all* Americans, I'm agin' it.

Pure and simple.
