Schwarzenegger says marijuana not a drug

Report: Schwarzenegger Says Marijuana Is Not a Drug

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says marijuana is not a drug, a British magazine reported Monday. But his spokesman said the governor was joking.

Schwarzenegger told the British edition of GQ magazine that he had not taken drugs, even though the former bodybuilder and Hollywood star has acknowledged using marijuana in the 1970s and was shown smoking a joint in the 1977 documentary "Pumping Iron."

"That is not a drug. It's a leaf," Schwarzenegger told GQ. "My drug was pumping iron, trust me."

Aaron McLear, Schwarzenegger's press secretary, said the governor made the comments in a lighthearted context, noting his interviewer was Piers Morgan, one of the judges on "America's Got Talent." Morgan is a former British newspaper editor.

"The governor was doing an interview with the host of 'America's Got Talent,' the newest version of the gong show," McLear said. "I think it's important to keep that quote in the context of the environment where it was said."

"Of course the governor understands marijuana is a drug. It's like when he goes on Leno or the Daily Show, if you took something like that out of context, it might seem shocking but it was in a silly entertainment context," he added.

In the interview for the magazine's December issue, Schwarzenegger refused to condemn politicians who decline to answer questions about drug use.

14. Is nicotene a drug?
If so, why isn't it regulated by FDA?

18. Yes, nicotine is a drug, and so is ethanol
Why they are regulated by the ATF instead of the FDA is a good question.

9. Has he said that? Or does he favor legalization?
I genuinely don't know- but I know that some Republicans of the Libertarian variety are pushing for Legalization - obviously the Religious right isn't keen on the idea.

Marijuana is not a drug, but benign hemp not a crop. Or some shit like that.

7. Heroin not a drug, it's a flower
cute little poppies.

Just sayin'. I'm fine with reclassifying marijuana, but not because it's a leaf. It's a stupid argument.

15. It is legal to have dried poppies...
They are used in flower arrangements. You can grind them up and make a tea. I'm not an expert on this, but a friend of mine has had me over to tea. :)

8. Well, coca is a leaf too....
but we won't get into that. I think we should declare victory in the war on drugs and divert the money to treatment centers and a more rational approach to the problem.

19. And chewing coca leaves is like drinking strong coffee.
Cocaine is refined product of the raw product, as is heroin. Pot and hash are both raw states of Cannabis. Big difference.

Edited on Mon Oct-29-07 10:10 AM by mike_c
I can remember buying $20 ounces that were mostly (or all) stems and leaves 40 years ago. Then cleaning them to remove all the loose seeds because they'd been allowed to pollinate and set seed! And yes, we had to walk ten miles uphill through the snow to get it....

22. Well, to be fair and balanced..
Even the best bud is about 25% leaf.

Actually to be accurate it's resin most of us are interested in, not the green plant material at all.

24. Yes, there is leaf in the best buds
Manicured bud still has leaf deep inside that can't be trimmed, they're engulfed with swollen calyxes. I'm not talking fan leaves here, just small bud leaf.

Ever been to a trimming party? ;)
