1. People who are happy to see people's homes burn down are fucking assholes. Period.
It doesn't even matter if they were "mcmansions" or "owned by celebrities"

What kind of a fucking sub-human gasbag takes pleasure in other people losing their homes?

They pretend to care about the California fire victims, but the innocent Iraqi victims are just "collateral damage"

9. I couldn't have said it any better than you did
I like to think that people actually care about other people, regardless of where they live, who they are or what they've done. I'm so disappointed when I find out I'm only deluding myself.

I reserve my derision for those that have earned it through their actions, like the members of Bush's minions and not where another human lived or what they've lost.

The fires affected a number of areas. The chances that those areas included no one but rich white people were nil.

15. You think a rich celebrity doesn't lose?
Photos, memorabilia, mementos, documents, antiques, certificates, awards...no amount of cash can replace the irreplaceable. In that regard the "rich" have much more to lose. A migrant worker can move to another canyon, make another lean-to, and go back to work because all he owned, he carried out.

A friend of mine who is a contractor lost only his house but his work truck and tools. Another--a co-worker lost antique musical instruments she's been collecting all her life. Sure they can write you a check for that stuff, but it can't be replaced.

Everybody loses so quit this crap that just because you have a little money and an insurance policy that life is just a fucking bowl of cherries.

my future SO lost his home, job and car all at once. Last week a co-woker said he hopes Los Angeles burns down. He thinks its real cute to bad-mouth L.A. since I used to live there and say it's better than N. Cal as far as jobs, entertainment, and especially food go.

11. I really fucking hate these people
Edited on Mon Oct-29-07 01:35 PM by policypunk
There are 29,000,000 people in California WHO ARE NOT RICH and just because somebody lives in a wealthy area doesn't make them rich.

My house is apprently worth $800,000 - $800,007 if you want to include my furniture - which my parents bought for me at Ikea when I left home... Maybe $800,999 if you include my mid-Clinton era Toyota.

I bought the house at the peak of the last slump and only recently paid off the mortgage. Alot of people with "million dollar homes" are perfectly normal people who just go caught up in appreciation. And if you were to sell, unless you run to Arizona your going to have to sink that money right into another house.

Yeah, I'm living like fucking 50 Cent here in "The O.C.", when I am actually home! my wonderful job dumps me in the frozen north for months at a time.

14. Air quality sucks so much here still...
Our whole office is still working from home until at least Wednesday when they can clean up the ash, etc. there.

Still have itchy eyes and a cold that persists with the crap I'm breathing now. And I'm one of the lucky ones here...

Yes, I also didn't like how the Rethuglicans manipulated the media into making it sound like this is a "do-over" for them in how they handled Katrina, and making it sound like they've made it hunky dory for everyone here. But that doesn't stop me from feeling totally bad for EVERYONE who's lost a home and other significant parts of their lives here.

It wasn't so much the allegations that it was "only" the rich who suffered, but rather a particular mulish bit of moral obstinacy that held no sympathy for any of the victims because they lived in an area prone to fire and didn't take the "proper" precautions and investments that truly frustrated me.

But we are a big tent... :eyes:

like the ones that suggest somehow "rich" (and of course EVERYONE in California is "rich") people suffer less than poor people when they lose their homes.

Or that we deserved it becuase we built homes in the path of a fire.

Or that we are going to all pay off our sub-prime seconds with our big insurance checks.

37. Heartfelt condolances
That you have to put up with idiots with Midwestern state avatars that have no clue as to what life is like in California. I used to travel through San Diego county a lot and although I'm not there now, I can imagine what a horror it is for ALL people there, rich and poor alike. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people on DU who appear liberal on the surface, but once you scratch the surface, the fascist comes right out, demonizing one group of people as being deserving of what happened to them.

39. MP... you gotta realize something--
MP... you gotta realize something-- those who made the allegations are 1. in the smallest of minorities around here and 2. are most likely unsettled themselves as they drew far more negative attention to themselves than I imagine they wanted. I'll bet they currently feel something akin to it being discovered they engage in book burning or puppy-stealing.

Having been active myself in most of those threads, I think they also realized (too late) that they took it a little too far... I only say that part though because I haven't seen too many of them around and the three I have seen have done everything BUT make mention of the CA Fires and the threads associated with them.

I've noticed (as trite as is sounds) that even on DU, tragedies like these bring out the best and worst of humanity. But I was comforted in knowing that it was more of the Best and less of the Worst on DU...

I think there's a difference between tolerating a thing versus condoning a thing. If Skinner agreed with every post that remained in existence, he'd be one crazy guy with seriously competing personalities. :)

You've probably used the CA Fire threads to update your Ignore function. I should have too, but my curiosity for those living far outside mainstream morality and the Social Contract fascinate the living sh*t out of me for some reason.

I'm not sure which is greater-- my frustration with them, or my fascination by them.
