GMO Products as a Condition for Ukraine to Enter WTO?
Ya know, when GMOs slapped me in the face as an issue that really wasn't getting anywhere near the *face time* it deserved and I decided to carry the banner for a while, It was mainly the simple fact that corporations would be patenting life forms that they had not discovered, invented or done anything other than had the temerity to file a patent on it. This was back when a Texas corporation filed and won a patent on basmati rice.Texas.Basmati rice. They have since lost that patent, but can you see the pandora's box of abuse that it can open up? I certainly had no idea that the patenting of seeds was going to become such a huge business that the WTO and the FAO would fall lockstep behind Monsanto. How much money and how much control over the food supply does <onsanto want? And how much are we willing to allow them to have? And Why in the World should they have this sort of political clout over whether a country joins the WTO?

GMO Products as a Condition for Ukraine to Enter WTO?
24.10.2007 16:21___ translated by Anna Ivanchenko

On October 25 in Geneva final round of negotiations on Ukraine joining World Trade Organization will take place; however, the issue of obligatory marking of products containing genetically modified organisms remains unsolved.

Liga website published an article “Gene Engineering May Obstruct Ukraine’s Way to WTO” drawing the readers’ attention to this problem.

The author of the article reminds that the Cabinet of Ministers decided to introduce an obligation of marking genetically modified foodstuffs starting from November 1, 2007.

“However, the American side of WTO holds a firm stand against such actions,” runs the article.

“It is common knowledge that the USA is among the biggest exporters of this kind of foodstuffs. That is why their actions can perhaps be interpreted as unwillingness to lose markets for their products,” notes the author.

Genetically modified organisms are those organisms the genetic material of which changed not as a consequence of replication and/or natural recombination but because of a modified gene or a gene of other biological species or kind added.

According to Kateryna Kartava, Ph.D., doctors don’t know which diseases a person can face after consuming gene engineering products.

1. Thank you for attempting to raise awareness
One of the mysteries to me is why people are not more concerned about GMO products.

Part of it must be that agribusiness has been quite successful in keeping negative study results out of the news here in the United States. Why is Europe accepting GMO--that to me is greater puzzle.

2. The EU is much less accepting of GMO than we are. France just put a total
ban on any new GMOs. against the wactions of the EU Parliament. It's going to be interesting to see how that plays out.
