Iraq is as sovereign as Cheney is credible

The State Department promised Blackwater USA bodyguards immunity from prosecution in its investigation of last month's deadly shooting of 17 Iraqi civilians, The Associated Press has learned.

The immunity deal has delayed a criminal inquiry into the Sept. 16 killings and could undermine any effort to prosecute security contractors for their role in the incident that has infuriated the Iraqi government.

"Once you give immunity, you can't take it away," said a senior law enforcement official familiar with the investigation.

A State Department spokesman did not have an immediate comment Monday. Both Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd and FBI spokesman Rich Kolko declined comment.

State had no immunity to offer, and at any rate, Iraq TO THIS DAY guarantees immunity to Blackwater shooters. They've talked about removing immunity without having actually done it. At all.

The Blackwater bodyguards had immunity regardless of any promise. And continue to have it.

When Karzai, on 60 minutes, said he asked bush to stop the bombing of his country he was ignored. So much so that he believed he had to take his case to the American people through 60 minutes. If they were truly sovereign he would have said stop bombing my country immediately and that would have been the end of it.
