China Birth Defects Soar Due to Pollution
http://www.planetark.org/dailynewsstory.cfm/newsid/45059/story.htm

Birth defects in Chinese infants have soared nearly 40 percent since 2001, a government report said, and officials linked the rise to China's worsening environmental degradation.

The rate of defects had risen from 104.9 per 10,000 births in 2001, to 145.5 in 2006, affecting nearly one in 10 families, China's National Population and Family Planning Commission said in a report on its Web site (www.chinapop.gov.cn).

Infants with birth defects now accounted for "about 4 to 6 percent of total births every year", the family planning agency said. Of these, 30 percent would die and 40 percent would be "disabled".

The World Health Organisation estimates about 3 to 5 percent of children worldwide are born with birth defects.

China's coal-rich northern province of Shanxi, a centre of noxious emissions from large-scale coke and chemical industries, had the highest rate of defects, Xinhua news agency said in a report carried by Monday's Beijing News.

"The incidence of birth defects is related to environmental pollution," the newspaper quoted An Huanxiao, director of Shanxi's provincial family planning agency, as saying.

2. And that's how China will be "stopped" in its power grab
There is already a woman shortage due to the "one-child" program, and if the next generation is plagued with birth defects and DNA/reproductive damage, eventually it may just be hard to keep up with their military aspirations.

Ironic, isn;t it? The most populous country on the planet may be decimated by the inability to reproduce..or to produce healthy people..

3. And Yet I'll Lay Odds That China Fixes Its Public Health Problems before We Fix Ours
Because they know that they must, and they don't do Denial internally.

6. I suspect environmental pollution plays a big part in the rise of
autism in the US. I suspect some of us have genetic composition making it dificult for us and our fetuses to screen out some sort of pollutant that causes the constellation of symptoms and behavior that is autism.

We should be looking at the Chinese as we would any sentinel species: pollution, overpopulation, corporate indulgence in literally feeding the masses toxic shit.

7. Wait a minute. Let's look at those quoted numbers
First they say that the rate in 2001 was 1.049%. Then it was 1.455% in 2006.

But that there were "4 to 6 percent" infants born with birth defects.

And, the WHO says the worldwide average is "3 to 5 percent".

So, is it that the Chinese are just now catching up? Or, are those numbers not being cited correctly?
