Fresno: "Sale of KFPT signals end of liberal talk" (changing to sports)
http://www.fresnobee.com/180/story/29982.html

KFPT, AM 790, is being purchased from Peak Broadcasting by Fat Dawgs 7, owners of local ESPN radio affiliate KFIG, AM 1430. The cost of the radio station is in the $2.5 million neighborhood.

Its current lineup of talk shows with a liberal slant will be replaced, most likely by sports programming. Look for the change to take place in either March or April.

One thing stands in the way of the new owners making an immediate format change. Peak Broadcasting picked up KFPT in November as part of the $90 million purchase of the eight stations previously owned by CBS Broadcasting.

Once the Peak-CBS deal gets a green light from the Federal Communications Commission, then the deal with Fat Dawgs 7 can move forward.

... Patty Hixson, senior vice president and general manager of Peak Broadcasting, says that Air America's financial problems were not a factor in the decision to sell KFPT.

"The station is just not a core asset for Peak. It has not been making money, so it is difficult to have it continue," she says.

1. Liberal talk radio is an over-rated concept. We just don't think like cons.
Conservative, by their very nature, are sheep. They seek affirmation in numbers, and in absolute agreement. I think this quest for the Holy Grail of Liberal Radio is a waste of time. We like to discuss things, to understand nuance and dig for facts. Conservatives are just the opposite...facts are ugly things which get in the way, and discussion is tantamount to admitting failure. Liberal radio just doesn't work because liberals don't need bloviating blowhards to stroke them all the time and tell them their paranoid fantasies are perfectly normal. Sad to see KFPT go, but really...we took over the government without liberal talk radio. THEY lost the government despite owning the airwaves. That should tell you how important either medium is in the overall theater of ideas.

4. That's the meme of those who try to sink Air America - lots of shennanigans
went into that - ans look - some like you buy it!
yeah! We don't need a place that speaks for us - in fact we're so damn independent, they should do away with DU/ the internet as well... We probably don't even exist - just 2-3 crazies that's all...See how it works?

7. I couldn't have "bought into it," because I never heard it.
I listened to AA for a while. And I stand by my observation. Mentioning DU is a non-sequitur, it has nothing to do with liberal talk radio. See how it works? You make shit up that I didn't say, I refute it. If you think you're as dumb as a Limbaugh listener, more power to you. But I find it incessantly boring to listen to a bunch of stuff I already agree with all the time. It doesn't challenge me to think, it just rewards me for thinking a certain way. Then nothing changes. *yawn*. Apparently we have a difference of opinion.

6. I'm sorry to disagree with you Atman.
But I have traveled across the country on business in cheap rentals and I am very, very sick of music all the time on every radio station. It is just so boring. (I've tried recorded books but I have to have at least five to get through a long drive and I've pretty well heard all the library has to offer. Not to mention I've lost several when changing cars.)

With all the travel I do, I listen constantly to the radio. When I find a liberal show I listen until I lose the signal. People are really bored with all music, all the time. What is the alternative? Right wing neo-nazis screaming at people or preachers trying to con you out of your money (especially in the South).

People want to listen to an alternative but there isn't much of a choice. I'm not the only one.

A RW idiot who goes to my church listens to NPR (most NPR stations only have shows in the morning and afternoon, otherwise you get classical music on those stations). He thinks NPR is Too liberal but he likes to listen to it. I honestly believe he would listen to liberal radio too if we had any stations. I'm always trying to get a liberal station that is on the other side of the mountain. It only comes in sporadically.

Believe it or not XM and other pay for radio is choppy in the mountains. Sometimes it comes in, sometimes it doesn't. I wont pay for something I can only hear half the time. Some radio stations on the other hand come in easily.

And if you want facts and constantly differing ideas, there no one better than Thom Hartmann. And he doesn't scream at people, call them names or belittle them for disagreeing.

8. I've only listened to Hartman a few times.
Usually when he was standing in for other people. Thanks for your more reasonable response...The Count was in full snark mode apparently.

When I listened to Stephanie Miller, I thought it was hysterical...while we were on the losing side. Once we "took over," it sounds more like the arrogant chest thumping that sickened me about the republic party. We have the power now...we should be using it. The lesson the GOP learned, admittedly, was propaganda, 24/7. But obviously, it doesn't work as well as they planned, did it? They couldn't hold on to power anywhere near as long as democratic party before them. Just sayin'. I agree that music radio sucks. I even have a Sirius radio sitting here unused. I listen to internet radio when able, otherwise I download NPR podcasts and free programming from iTunes. Way better than radio, because I control it completely!

Peace.

11. It has it's own battery
It charges whenever you plug it in. I listen to mine through the car radio using a little fm transmitter attachment. I use headphones only when I'm snowboarding, otherwise I play it through a radio or boom box of some sort.

3. They did that in NYC as well with any talk that was not fascist enough
We had a station - WED - that has as liberal highlight Alan Colmes (from Hannity and..)
Most of it was adice column - but a lit of people tuned in the political talk - their only source of 'not quite propaganda"
That was before Air America.

9. "It has not been making money"
Then you don't have the best sales people who know how to sell the product! :banghead:

Patty Hixson rang a bell so I googled... http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Peak+Broadcasting+Patty+Hixson&btnG=Google+Search

Looks like Peak already has its 'star' station with AM580. http://www.kmj580.com/djs/inga.shtml
