Hillary "Driver's License" for illegals, general election suicide
I mean it, if she is the nominee this will cost us the White House and reduce the liberal bloc on the high court to irrelevance.

I'm not, but I also don't really care.

If you don't define yourself and what you believe in, the other side will do it for you.

5. Oh grow up...she did not endorse Spitzer's plan
If you have any ears and listened, she simply said that she could understand what he was trying to do...which is bring the illegals out of the shadows. That was the point for her: trying to bring the illegals out of the shadows so NY knows who it has on its streets. She basically said Spitzer was trying to step up and tackle immigration since this Administration has failed to do so.

18. Yeah, she wouldn't answer
Clinton doubltetalk. Here in this one thread, people don't know whether she's for it or against it.

7. I don't think so. It's being tried in NY state, but it's not like she's real
excited by it. And it does make sense on some level--people want to act as if illegals are not here, and are not going to drive. They're not going away, but in the meantime they're on the road.

8. Her answer(S) were self-contradic tory...or...to use a phrase people will understand: FLIP FLOP
What on earth was she thinking?

She did two things with her response: 1) showed how she talks both sides on an issue, 2) found a way to take the wrong side on an issue that people resonate with

amazing! what a feat!

10. She gave a nuanced, thoughtful response, but unfortunately, there's no
room for those type of answers these days, especially with Lou Dobbs beating the drums everyday. Certain questions require BLACK/WHITE elementary school answers, and sadly, the issue of licenses for "undocumented workers" is one of them.

she doesn't support it at the federal level. DL's are a state issue. She supports comprehensive reform at the national level and supports Spitzer as a state response to bush*'s national failure

17. It's a hot button issue which the media fuels, but generally a good idea.
Has some support here in CA, home for many migrant workers and illegal immigrants.

(aside) Osama bin Laden will *not* get a license.

The conflation and hyperbole are incredible.

19. The media is trying to hang 'Dems for illegal aliens' around our necks
They've been trying to take the most foaming-at-the-mouth fascist issue for 2007 and wrap it around the Democrat's throats. They are so hoping that Fred Thompson, or someone, builds up the xenophobic bigots into a raging mob against illegal immigration support by Democrats. It won't work, but they'll try to hit Hillary, or whatever Dem is nominated, with it to rile up the ugly underbelly.

Watching a national media work their race-baiting into a major election issue is so depraved, that, somehow, it perfectly suits the indecent profession that American journalism has become.

I don't know why Hillary wasn't prepared for that. I doubt any of the other Dem candidates would have done any better if they were being targeted by the media. Because any reasonable response is wrong, assuming you want to be elected.

To that end, the answer is simple: 'We don't need no stinkin' illegal aliens ridin' on our roads. This is Murka, and these are Murkin roads.'

This is what American journalism has devolved into - race-baiting ugly. What a disgraceful and unreputable profession they have turned themselves into. Hillary should know that about them. And this is the ugliness they are trying to provoke against Democrats to try to keep the fascists in power. She and her crew should know that too, and should be better prepared for it in the future.

20. welcome to the illegal alien party
Seriously. Is this out of hand or what?

I know I put that in the harshest of terms....but you're so right and it's obvious from the polls, from the implosion of the "comprehensive" immigration bill that generated so much outrage it shut down the phones and faxes in the entire Senate building...

yet if you mention the realities of this on many Democrat blogs you are attacked!
(except for DU which is why I brazenly agreed with you on dailykos you would be attacked).

She hurt herself by trying not to hurt herself. She should have picked one answer and stuck with it.

22. I know I'm going against the grain here,
but so be it. I don't agree with handing out DL to illegals. Sorry, I just don't. Yes, they're going to drive anyway, but why encourage it? Insurance should cover if you get hit by an uninsured driver illegal or not. And the way Spitzer handled this is political suicide, not even holding any hearings before attempting to push this through. I agree with Dodd on this, DL's are a privilege, not a right.

As far as Hillary, let's just say she strayed off message, badly.

23. Where did Hillary say she would give
drivers licenses to illegals, and who would be dumb enough to believe that? The various and several States have their own traffic laws; if the racists in those states want to keep people in the shadows, they can.
'Drivers Licences for Illegals (OMFG!) is just so much ridiculous BS that no one is going to remember a month from now, let alone next year.
Get a grip.

24. She (eventually) said she would support Spitzer's proposal.
He's now proposing this ridiculous 3 tier system of licenses. No, she isn't handing them out herself, or her office, but her support is sending a message.

And you're nuts if you think this isn't an issue. If you're fortunate enough to live in a largely liberal enclave, then that's great, but there's an uproar about this that is not going to die down. And not everyone who disagrees with this policy is a racist. New Yorkers themselves don't agree with this, is that 60 or so percent all racist?

25. Keith Ellison is my Congressman, so yeah, maybe I live in a
liberal enclave, but it's racist to mark people's lincense w/ a Yellow Star as if they're a dirty foreign invader. Everybody should have the same rights under the Constitution, I don't see what's so difficult about that.
I can see it as yet another Repig wedge-issue though.

27. They're not dirty, but technically, they ARE foreign invaders.
Or at least transgressors. They, I assume we're talking Mexicans, are generally hard working, family oriented, pleasant people. But they're still breaking the law. The Constitution is said to apply to those with citizenship. I'll acknowledge there's some debate here.

Assuaging the illegal problem involves putting penalties on those who come here illegally, and something Lou Dobbs types don't mention enough, on those businesses that hire them. They need to be hit the hardest, actually. In addition to doing what we can for the countries of origin to keep the incentive to stay. Only so much we can do on that last one.

You're right it's a wedge issue, though. And may very well be successful like gay bashing in '04. So all the more reason we need to be on the right side of it.
