You can check for sex-offenders and their addresses in your community at this website..

some will be at the end of the list with no address listed, but you will have the names..so maybe another website can check by name..

There are 193 living in MY town :scared:

1. Yikes! 193?
Thanks for posting the link. It listed zero for my community, zero for the town to the west, and one for the town south of us.

But, it's not like pedophiles always check-in with the authorities, so...

3. Also, throw away any apples or unwrapped candy.
They probably contain razor blades.

Also, be on the look out for temporary tattooes that look like little blue stars. They contain LSD, and will turn your children into druggies.

7. My daughter got on of those little blue stars once!!
I did my duty as a good mother and licked all the stuff off of the paper to see if it was LSD.

It turned out to be just a stupid temporary tattoo and I got nothing but a blue tongue for my efforts. :(

I remember going up onto someone's porch and they had a barrel there where we could bob for apples...Imagine someone doing that today? We're planning on having a party next year and we're going to have an apple bobbing barrel.

it just seems that that is the way things are.

oh and by the way, everyone in the palm beach area should be careful not to let their kids ring rush limbaugh's doorbell. he travels to the dominican republic to fondle little boys. don't let your kids anywhere near that fat pedophile's house. even if he doesn't feel up your kid, there's a chance his candy is laced with viagra or oxycontin.

5. We have 126 in our zip code
and at least a third of them are out of compliance--no address, many without pictures, too

Only one lives near where my grandkids will be T or T'ing, but he's in an apartment in the Senior residence just outside of our housing area.

Thanks for thinking of checking that out. :hi:

The link you gave didn't lead me to the state offenders list link, but by googling Megan's Law California, I was able to get to the look up site.

PS One little girl in a classroom where i substituted yesterday mentioned that when I get candy, maybe NOT get candy that has nuts in it 'cause she's allergic, and maybe a lot of other kids are, too.

That was something I had really never given any thought. Interesting point made by a 3rd grader.

21. the site I listed is strictly by town/city
but you are right.. there are plenty of lists around..

My boys used to go with a crowd of about 10 kids.. They were mischief-makers, so I always half expected that a cop would call on ME to tell me what THEY did  but we never worried that much about their safety when they were young..

Most people around here just have parties these days..

last year , I think we had about 5 trick or treaters.. My husband's co-workers ended up eating the candy I had purchased :)

Edited on Wed Oct-31-07 12:40 PM by DefenseLawyer
I am a parent, my kids are trick or treating and I want to insure they are safe. Do you really think former sex offenders are routinely grabbing kids off their porches every Halloween? Don't let them treat or treat on the beach either, as there may be a shark attack. The recidivism rate among sex offenders is generally lower than for criminals in general. There is no rational reason to think that those on the "list" are any more likely to harm your kid than some creep who has yet to be caught and is thus not on any list at all. I would hope that we would make sure that our kids were not going to be put in a situation where they would face danger on any porch, list or not, such as by going out alone or by taking other actions which aren't safe. Otherwise this just seems like unnecessary hysteria.

If you want to protect your kids use reflective tape and flashlights, and upgrade their safety seats, because the biggest risk to their safety, by a long shot, is car accidents.

We're trick or treating in our neighborhood. The one which my kids and I walk through routinely. There is no danger in them going house to house to get candy, especially with my wife or I walking with them. I refuse to let Halloween be stolen by paranoia.

26. Just the facts, ma'am, or sir as the case may be
The U.S. Department of Justice found that over a three year period after being released
from prison, 5.3% of sex offenders were rearrested for a new sex crime (Bureau of Justice
Statistics, 2003). Studies by Canadian researchers involving over 29,000 sex offenders found a
14% recidivism rate among all sex offenders, with 13% of child molesters re-arrested, and rapists
re-arrested at a slightly higher rate of about 20% (Hanson & Bussiere, 1998; Hanson & Morton-
Bourgon, 2004).

The overall recidivism rate for convicted felons is around 60%. Released prisoners with the highest rearrest rates were robbers (70.2%), burglars (74.0%), larcenists (74.6%), motor vehicle thieves (78.8%), those in prison for possessing or selling stolen property (77.4%), and those in prison for possessing, using, or selling illegal weapons (70.2%).
So yes, the recidivism rate among sex offenders is generally less than for criminals overall.
Sorry to rain on your parade.

Just adding my two cents to the discussion. Sorry to hear about your experiences. Certainly don't take my position to be "pro-molester" or to discount what a serious problem child abuse is. The fact that you were molested as a child by a convicted sex offender is terrible, but nonetheless is is statistically rare.

49. I'm sorry
But I can't find any DOJ statistics or other studies that say that 30% of sex offenders re-offend with additional sexual offenses. I have seen a statistic that says convicted sex offenders are more likely than non-sex offenders to commit a new sexual offense. In other words it is more likely for a sex offender who re-offends to do so with another sex offense than it is for say a car thief to re-offend with a sex offense. But that is not the same thing as saying sex offenders as a whole re-offend more than criminals as a whole, as it only looks at those that do re-offend, not the percentage that do. Even the 30% number your doctor told you is still half the overall recidivism rate for felons.

53. True
but rearrest rates are one concrete way to measure recidivism. Of course not every sex offender who re-offends gets arrested, then again not every car thief who steals another car gets arrested either. The fact is that most child molesters molest someone in their own family and, statistically, the vast majority of those that get convicted of it (and thus get put on "the list" which began this discussion)don't get convicted of it again. Which does back to my original point, which was there is very little rationality in freaking out over the list, when there are probably just as many or more creeps who have never been convicted to get on the list in the first place who are in our communities or in our families.

As with "homosexual," I think most people associate that term with "pedophile."

You can become a registered sex offender if caught having sex in public (parking) with your legal spouse.

This list isn't very helpful because it lumps people that are no danger to you or your kids with people that are likely threats. If you want to fear the neighbor that exposed themself in the park as much as the neighbor that was a convicted pedophile then you probably think going into Iraq makes sense.

33. My favorite trick or treat story
When I was in college, some friends had a little boy and he went trick or treating in their neighborhood while Mom stood on the sidewalk watching him. He came running back to his mom after going to one of the neighbors and he had his hand held out and yelled "Look, Mom, DRUGS!!"

One of their neighbors was handing out Flintstones vitamins.

To this day, my husband says every Halloween "Don't worry, honey, if we run out of candy, we can hand out vitamins!"

we would dump all the candy ..and the stuff i didn't want them to have, is what I would give out the rest of the night:)

The kids would say.. "Let's don't go to the toothbrush house"
