AFSCME Endorses Clinton

By JESSE J. HOLLAND, AP Labor Writer 4 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees endorsed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Wednesday, a major boost for the Democratic front-runner.

he union is the largest for workers in the public service sector with 1.4 million members nationwide. AFSCME represents a diverse group of service and health care workers in the public and private sectors including nurses, bus drivers, child care providers, custodians and librarians.

Clinton will officially accept the endorsement later Wednesday.

"I am honored to receive the support of AFSCME," Clinton said in a statement. "In my administration, America's working families will again have a partner in the White House."

2. Yeah, it's over. Just like it was in 2004 when they endorsed Howard Dean,
then jumped ship when he didn't do well as the votes started being cast.

Still, good news for Senator Clinton, at least so long as she seems the likely winner.

I guess it's get on early and stay on, unless things start to look bad. Not a bad strategy to garner power.

6. lol, for who?
Worked out well for President Dean. AFSME is desperate to support a winner. That's why they endorsed Dean. He looked invincible. They just made the same mistake.

3. Several there argued "she would have trouble beating a Republican with her negatives so high."

One official who attended today’s board meeting said 23 board members had voted to endorse Mrs. Clinton while 10 voted for other candidates or for no endorsement. At the meeting several officials argued against backing Mrs. Clinton, saying that she would have trouble beating a Republican in November 2008 because her negatives are so high.

10. They already have health insurance
As nice as a union endorsement is, its not based on the quality of any candidates plans for health reform.
