Most people here despise Phelps because he's a religious extremist who is calling for the extermination of gay people.

Most freepers despise Phelps because he protests the funerals of their "war heroes", which pisses off their pro-war base.

By the way, if you go to freeperland and do a little reading, you'll find that a lot of people there believe that Phelps is a left-wing plot to undermine support for the Iraq war (as if we really need help in that department) and to demonize right wingers in the media. They genuinely dislike him, but refuse to admit that he's simply taking their own Christian values to the extreme. To them, he's a left-wing plant sent to undermine everything they believe in.

Not all freepers believe that, but a scary number do.

So if one's protesting the other then it's just fighting amongst themselves.

Phelps' cult is unique in that he's loathed by both the left and right pretty ferociously.
