What is the purpose of the Democrats being in the majority?
As far as I'm concerned, the Democrats might as well still be in the minority. Although there have been some successes under the Congressional Democratic majority (i.e. the increase in the minimum wage), for the most part I can't tell the difference between the old Democratic minority, and the new Democratic majority.

What good does a Democratic majority do the American people, if that Democratic majority cannot stop an Attorney General nominee who doesn't have the courage to call torture by it's name, and say this is not a part of our American values.

What good does a Democratic majority do the American people, if that Democratic majority cannot put a stop to this Administration's continuous grab for powers that it should not have (i.e. warrantless wiretaps, surveillance of peace groups, etc).

And the sad part is, the U.S. Congress is hearing the American people loud and clear. The Democrats in Congress know in their heart of hearts what they were elected last year to do. They know what the will and desire of the American people is. They lack the courage to do it. And that, for me, is very telling. And very sad.

During his commentary on the Tom Joyner Morning Show this week, Tavis Smiley mentioned an article that was in Roll Call, that basically said there was a lot of back-room deal making that allowed Judge Southwick to be confirmed. Apparently, people like Harry Reid allowed Southwick to go through: 'we'll give you Southwick if you give us this...'

And I'm sorry, but there should be some basic principles which are NON-NEGOTIABLE. Principles we as Americans hold dear and we say: this is not up for negotiation or compromise.

3. The occasional shift in majority status in Congress
is necessary to preserve the illusion of democracy.

7. I don't expect magic. Unless magic means expecting Congress to stand on PRINCIPLE.
I expect Congress to stand up for basic American values such as condoning torture. And if that's expecting magic, well then, I am guilty.

And I'm sorry, but I cannot work to get more Democrats elected. Unless the Democrats that are currently there start showing me something, why would I work to elect just more of the same? Fot example, people like Claire McCaskill, Bob Casey and Jim Webb were just elected to the Senate last November. And already they are complict in Bush's agenda. They voted for that awful FISA bill.

I will not work to elect more of just the same.

8. sometimes I believe they really enjoy this farce at our expense
I can envision them laughing at their thousand dollar cocktail parties at the pathetic wishes of the "little people" like any other modern day politician/aristocrat. Much like the chimp and dick do regularly.
