Supporters of president, march in the streets in support of giving him more power.
The streets were filled with people dressed in the party's red trademark garb in support of the president's proposition which would ultimately give him more power. Caracas, Venezuela.

4. Chavez's supporters looked less coerced than the Republicans that
support Bush. But, yes, I worded it for the parallels.

3. I respect Chavez's popularity
how could you not with the boneheads we have in government but it is still a slippery slope for the Venezuelan people IMO. A unitary executive is a unitary executive by any other name no matter how sweet the smell, if that makes any sense. Even if you have the "perfect" guy running your country to grant him such power unrestrained is a risk of that power corrupting.

5. I think Chavez believes that if he steps down
the country will just revert to the way it was before he took office. The right has already tried to bring him down once, back in 2002, and it is hard to win when you have respect for the law but your opposition doesn't. How's that for a parallel with this country?
