Why did Charles Schumer recommend Michael Mukasey in the first place?
"Schumer -- a Democratic stalwart who had recommended Mukasey to the White House as a consensus candidate."

How did Schumer originally get the idea that Mukasey would be a better US Attorney General than other people Bush might have nominated?

Speculation welcome.

1. Schumer knows Mukasey personally. They go back a ways
Schumer also suggested (to Bush) Mukasey for the Supreme Court back in 2003.

2. Why speculate? Mukasey handled local cases from 1993
And no one accused the authorities of abuse.

Schumer, Feinstein ‘surprise’ thwarts efforts on Mukasey

The coordinated statements released late Friday afternoon by two Democratic senators that they would break ranks and support President Bush’s attorney general nominee largely muted opposition from a Democratic base that has become increasingly frustrated with Congress, activist leaders said Monday.
