Iranian consulates reopen in Iraq - US to release IraniansNov 6, 2007, 14:17 GMT
Baghdad - The US military in Iraq said Tuesday it would release from custody in the coming days nine Iranians, including five that Tehran insists are diplomats.
US military spokesman Rear Admiral Greg Smith said at a Baghdad press conference that two of the detainees were arrested on suspicion of helping Shiite militias in northern Iraq.
US forces had detained five staff of the Iranian consulate in Arbil, the capital of the autonomous Kurdish region, over charges of offering assistance to armed groups in Iraq. (

Iran's government (had) denied the allegations and argued that the personnel were diplomats, a claim rejected by the United States.
