AP: GOP Forces Debate on Cheney Impeachment

By JIM ABRAMS, Associated Press Writer

Tuesday, November 6, 2007

House Republicans, changing course midway through a vote, tried to force Democrats into a debate on a resolution to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney on the grounds he purposely led the country into war against Iraq.

The GOP tactics reversed what had been expected to an overwhelming vote to table, or kill, the resolution by longshot Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich.

Midway through the vote, with instructions from the GOP leadership, Republicans one by one changed their votes from yes — to kill the resolution — to no, trying to force the chamber into a debate and an up-or-down vote on the proposal.

At one point there were 290 votes to table. After the turnaround, the final vote was 251-162 against tabling, with 165 Republicans voting against it.

"We're going to help them out, to explain themselves," said Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas. "We're going to give their day in Court".

15. Many DUers have more than a clue
and are sick of the dems in Congress allowing themselves to be fucked over. We need more strong Democrats who are willing to stand up for the people and the constitution-more like Dennis Kucinich.

4. It takes a simple majority to impeach. The Democrats have a majority.
Time to separate the bullshit from the ice-cream.

5. the dems got played today big time.
Their won't be a debate and now- unless something else really devastating comes up- it won't be brought up again. There won't even be a debate in Committee.

12. I'm saying the repukes played games with their votes not to table
hoyer and pelosi scrambled- and looked out of control- to keep it from a floor debate. Ultimately they succeeded and now it's going back to the JC to languish. There won't be a debate.

16. the bill goes right back to committee..where it sat
since April.when Dennis first presented it..it came full circle

the GOP game plan was to vote for it coming to the floor....but the Democrats intercepted that by going back to Conyers.....

10. The ones who voted to table got played.
The Republicans were smart, no doubt, but the "moderates" walked right into the trap with white flags flying.

Now, the Republicans can use the same line Bush used against Kerry, "Well, you voted for it senator."

"Well, you voted against a debate, congressman."
