Senate confirms Mukasey as attorney general
Bush nominee wins backing for post despite waterboarding flap

WASHINGTON - The Senate confirmed retired judge Michael Mukasey as attorney general Thursday night to replace Alberto Gonzales, who was forced from office in a scandal over his handling of the Justice Department.

Mukasey was confirmed as the nation’s 81st attorney general after a sharp debate over his refusal to say whether the waterboarding interrogation technique is torture.

President Bush thanked the Senate, even though the margin had been whittled down from nearly unanimous by a sharp debate over Mukasey’s refusal to say whether the waterboarding interrogation technique is torture.

1. One of my concerns was the fact that Marc Mukasey is working for Rudy's firm
Edited on Fri Nov-09-07 02:17 AM by MagickMuffin
and is keeping Bernie's prosecutors from letting people testify regarding with Bernie worked for Rudy.

But the biggest concern is after a little digging I found out Marc is a corporate lawyer and he actually went and had investigations halted at the DOJ for his corporate clients.

Now it looks as though daddy will be a bigger help, perhaps.

more info on Marc here:

edit to add:

Interesting most of the presidential candidates didn't cast a vote. Notice that lieberman is listed as I.D.

So now he is considered an independent democrat? Excuse me while I:rofl:

2. Is this a dupe;)
Or is everybody asleep;)

Yep, the waterboarding answer sucked beyond belief. I had some hope for this guy in the way he handled the Lindauer forced medication issue. He made a bad initial decision and then rallied and set her free with out forcing her to take meds she didn't need. Had a few other good decisions for "the little guy" but if Bushco accuses you, I guess he thinks you're not human.

What utter bull shit.

:hi:

3. I've been revising my first post.
Couldn't quite get my message right, so you may want to read it again.

I have very mixed feelings about Mukasey. I don't know if he'll be more of the same. There is a large part of me that doesn't trust him. I guess it's that guilt by association.

He isn't the only one who can be a judge of character....

I hope you had a great vacation:hi:

14. So he'll now spread his tentacles across the country
to assist Rudy. I see the candidates did not vote. How convenient.

16. Yep, no candidate voted for Mukasey
I guess they didn't want ANY PART of it. Figures they wouldn't want to put their candidacy on the line. Cowards.

I sure would like to know why Schumer recommended Mukasey in the first place. From one of the links in my first post, there was a reference to Schumer recommending Mukasey to the Supreme Court.

What is his relationship to Mukasey?
Do they owe each other?
Are you part of a gang?

I knew that he would vote in favor of Mukasey since he recommend him to begin with, but what's his angle.

Does Schumer know they the Mukasey's are involved in Rudy's campaign?
Is he trying to help them along?

Who can answer my questions?

And WHY does Schumer belong to this group of neocons: he is listed in the board of advisor's???

Sheesh how long is it going to take to undo this mess?

4. None of the "Dem" yeas surprised me
Bayh--dlc, likely to be Hillary's choice for vp

Carper--dlc, hostile to progressives & progressive values

Feinstein--war profiteer

Landrieu--I have no idea why she votes the way she does, but her pattern is to vote with repugs on big issues

Nelson(NE)--republican

Schumer--opportunist

8. Damn, you're good!
I don't have to say anything after that...but I will. I was expecting more 'nays.' 40 is a high water mark and those away would have voted nay. But it's not enough to just have a moral victory.

"Nelson (NE)--Republican" - priceless;)

5. So. looking over the lists, one thing becomes clear...
Whichever party may have nominal control of the Senate, there are only somewhere between 40-44 Senators truly worthy of the title "Democrat."

Kind of explains this whole past year, doesn't it? :-(

7. I hope that both Feinstein and Schumer lose their seats due to this TREASON.
We, the people, have the power to kick (vote) out the "old guard" and let's start with these two SELL-OUTS?

12. 5 Pres Cands (4D, 1R) wussed-out on voting. Way to take a stand on torture there folks...
I'll give McCain a pass; he's missed A LOT of votes, so I've come to expect this from him. But Clinton, Obama, Biden, and Dodd have some 'splaining to do.

13. Wow! Not one Repuke voting against him, yet plenty of Dems for him & then there are the candidates
for President (Biden, Clinton, Obama, Dodd, McCain) who don't bother to vote.

None of them deserve a vote as far as I'm concerned...they can't even stand firm and oppose this nomination and show where they stand on the matter.

17. Slightly off-topic: Please make them stop calling Lie-berman an (ID-CT)
the ID is supposed to be for "Independent Democrat". Lie-berman is no longer a Democrat. He was the candidate of the "Connecticut for Lie-berman" Party, whatever that is. If anyone deserves to be called an "ID", it is Bernie Sanders, who actually votes with the Dems more than once in a blue moon.
