Fat tourists are causing "Small World" boats to run aground!
Just heard on the teevee news. BWHAHAHAHAHA! Disney denies it's the fat tourists, but the boats have been running fine since the attraction was created in the fifties. In recent years, though, they've begun running aground at two places throughout the world's most annoying attraction. They say "heavy loads" are causing it. Well, what the hell is in the boats, shipping containers filled with Chinese toys? Of course it's the fat tourists. Disney is just worried about offending any of their guests.

1. Best (and most accurate) summation of the situation

The small world was not intended to be invaded by small planetoid visitors.

3. Is it that, or is Disney trying to cram more people in the boats?
It is a production environment. Treat the people like steerage, move 'em along.

8. In defense of Disney, the rides are strictly regulated for liability reasons.
I worked at one of their theme parks, and they are mad serious about following safety regulations. I don't think they'd want to overload boats unless they want a potential lawsuit from angry guests.

18. That depends on if they're loading based upon number of passengers vs. weight load.
I suspect that they're doing the boats by number of passengers; otherwise, this wouldn't be happening if done by weighing passengers prior to the ride.

28. Maybe they could use that new naked x-ray machine, too!
To see if they're carrying contraband Ho Ho's or corn dog's. Might as well totally humiliate the guests, right?

The ride workers need to silently count riders ...that guy counts as 2, those women count as 1.5 each so together they equal 6, that obese teenager counts as 3...
They could use some creative math.

25. It is indeed. I work for the mouse
although now I'm a contract artist and no longer an employee( or "cast member") thank goodness. I rarely go to the parks anymore, but when I do go to Epcot to grab a bite to eat I'm AMAZED at the size increase of the general guest population. There are more and more people who fall into the morbidly obese category-and many of them can't walk anymore, they use those "hoverounds" instead. Sometimes I'll get on a ferry to cross the lagoon to make it on time for a dinner date at the Marrakesh or some other restaurant on the far end of the park, and a single person will walk on to the boat and make the whole craft tilt alarmingly to one side. The boat's pilot often looks a bit worried when this happens. I know that many people have health problems that cause weight gain, but when it gets that severe it's time to seek some medical help, imho. And there are those without health issues who don't seem to know when to say "when". We have become a society that-in SO MANY ways- is coming undone due to our own excesses.

Several of the rides had disclaimers about very large people being excluded from the ride at the discretion of the operator for the safety of all passengers.

30. Okay, Connie. Sure.
Whatever you say. Do you deny global warming, too?

It is a FACT. The American population is getting larger. Airlines have experienced the same problem, and it impacts their fuel costs and the even the width of the seats.

Do you know that your even you car has a weight limit? It's on a sticker on the door jam. What do you think the weight is that they use to determine the car's load? 150 lbs. per person! Because these regulations were written DECADES ago. If you don't think people are getting fatter, take a trip to any mall, or, of course, to Disney World.

Everything except group hugs is "bashing" to you. If you can't see the irony in the "Small World" ride being closed because people have gotten too fat, then don't read the thread. As I've stated hear before, I used to be pretty heavy myself. I'm not anymore. I understand how hard it is for some people. I really don't care how hard it is for people who drink full-strength Coke by the quart and eat a crate of Cheetohs while watching TV all day...they're their own worst enemy.

If you want to start a "metabolism" thread, though, go right ahead. I really don't care what kind of names you call me just because I find humor in a story you cannot. Must EVERY thread on DU be a fight?
