For context, a comparison of first poll taken on impeaching Bush and highest support for impeaching Clinton:

Nixon poll DAY before he resigned:

Nixon poll nine months before he resigned:

2. What's really disturbing about this
...is that the Democrats seem to be assuming that the public is too stupid to tell the difference between impeachment over compromising national security and impeachment over lying about a blowjob.

4. I have a hard time even believing that's the issue. I think it's one of three other things
  1. they are afraid they will implicate themselves since so many rubberstamped the worst of Bush's actions.

  2. they are afraid of the business interests that back Bush & Cheney or hope to be their new servants.

  3. they think the public will forget them instantly once they are removed and make winning 2008 harder. Carter barely beat Ford after Nixon was run out of office. They may think they are taking a page from the GOP's approach to bin Laden: you can't kill a bad guy twice (but you can kill his no name right hand man nine or twelve times).

As for that bit about the public not be able to tell the difference, you are right. They would either have to think we are retarded or they would have to be retarded themselves. I don't think the second is true except in a moral sense.

3. Clinton's Impeachment was unwarranted and everyone knew it - that's why the backlash
By contrast Bush's Impeachment will be legitimate and the nation will welcome it and the people who bring it to them.
