The Free Rice CHALLENGE
Edited on Fri Nov-09-07 02:34 PM by Greyskye
You may have heard about this program. It is a web based word game. The rules are simple:

* Click on the answer that best defines the word.
* If you get it right, you get a harder word. If wrong, you get an easier word.
* For each word you get right, we donate 10 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program.

http://www.freerice.com/

I just spent a few minutes, and donated almost 2000 grains of rice. (That was my goal, but it locked up on me at 1920 grains).

I challange all of DU to at least meet my score, and post their screen-shots here. And hey, you may learn something! I know I did - the words started getting really challenging for me around level 45. Good luck!

1. Is there some reason they won't just donate the rice....
without making it contingent on my working vocabulary?

4. non-snarky answer
From the FreeRice FAQ:

If FreeRice has the rice to give, why not give it all away right now?

FreeRice is not sitting on a pile of rice―you are earning it 10 grains at a time. Here is how it works. When you play the game, advertisements appear on the bottom of your screen. The money generated by these advertisements is then used to buy the rice. So by playing, you generate the money that pays for the rice donated to hungry people.

on White Russians (she was bringing me doubles & I don't DRINK)..I ended up in the HighRoller room

It has a happy ending though..

My gambling buddy took all my money from me except $40 ( I had won about $1,500)..and he only let me play a machine in there ONE time I won on every one I played.. the $5, $10, $25, & $50.. I left the high roller room with $760.00).. He refused to let me play the $100 slot :)

so my "Laughlin husband, Rob" used to drive me there.. I can't drive at night..

He would ALWAYS take my money and make me go to my room (when I'm winning)..and would not give it back to me until we got back into california..Bastard :)

It;s funny.. one time my husband DID come with me, and a lady in the group asked me if I had gotten divorced from Rob ..My husband and I laughed and explained it to her :)

while we went and played our fifty bucks. lol

We were both lowrent addicts. After Sunday dinner, the guys would nod out. As soon as they did, Lady shook up some daquiris and had the cards out. We went up to Reno and Tahoe a few times together. It was almost more fun to watch her have fun than to play. :)

12. Posting screenshots

It's a good thing to know, and really quite simple. You need 2 things:
1) Method of creating a screen cap
2) Hosting site on the web.

For acquiring the actual screen capture, there are numerous freeware/shareware programs out there. I use FastStone Screen Capture (version 2.0). It's freeware and doesn't expire. The latest versions from FastStone are however, only good for 30 days I believe. www.faststone.org

For a hosting site, there are many choices. I use www.photobucket.com. It's free and quite simple to use.

When you have your picture captured and uploaded to a hosting site, you simply use that host link for your uploaded picture in your posts here at DU or anywhere else.

Have fun!

Although that "Print Screen" button should send a screen cap somewhere! :dunce: The drawback is that it takes a pic of your entire desktop, as opposed to a selected portion.
