ABS cement on PVC?
posted in home improvement but I need to know fast - anybody?

Argh. Found the fittings I need so I don't have to drive 20 miles to town for a 79 cent coupling, but all I can find is ABS glue.

Can I use it for a pretty low pressure situation on pvc? Any other ideas?

2. No.
Use PVC Primer AND PVC cement.

That's how I would do it.

3. Some plumbing codes call for "verifiable" primer and glue.
The primer is a bright color that inspectors can see.

10. I found some silicon sealer so I think I might go with that instead.
yeah its a repair so its just a couple of couplings, not the whole project
(which is quite a "interesting" hybrid of pvc and ancient galvanized as it is)

6. temporary fix is the way this whole place is put together!
 baling wire just isn't much good for plumbing and the sun ruins duct tape.

8. Remember, the abs cement is a glue, the pvc primer and cement actually "fuse" with the PVC

9. Definitely not if it is on the supply side.
That ABS glue will screw with you, definitely not for consumption.

For what it's worth, there is an adhesive called Transition that works on both.

13. Okay, now the really funny thing is...
if I was to use silicone for the project, I would finish it off with really tightly wrapped duct tape.

silicone will seal the pipes together, but it will peel off of the pipe (cause it's got no 'grip'). You need to roughen up the pvc with some coarse sandpaper first, that'll help too.

necessity (and not wanting to drive to town) is the mother of invention...

14. You will be fine with silicone.
Especially considering it is a gravity-fed system.

17. Two part epoxy will work....
..the universal solution to adhesion. The pipe will give before the epoxy.

18. No.
Not if you want it to last very long. Primer and PVC glue is the only thing that will create a permanent weld- the primer cleans the surface of the plastic and dissolves the slick outer surface, which allows the glue to penetrate into the plastic and create a permanent weld.

I know this because I designed, built, and did troubleshooting on landscape irrigation systems for five years. I think my blood still has PVC glue in it because of all the miles of piping I put together over those years.
