So I get this "concerned" e-mail about The Golden Compass

A new fantasy movie based on author Phillip Pullman's books. I'm not going to paste it, you'll get it soon enough. They're relentless. So here's what I sent back...

Thanks for the tip. I'll see it twice in the Theater and buy 4 DVDs and give it to poor children. This is America. You don't like secular entertainment, stay home and watch 7th Heaven re-runs. I'm getting tired of everything in my life being Christo-fascist-ofied.

BTW: a "militant Atheist" is not, by any definition, "Satanic". The whole idea of atheism is the lack of belief in guiding spirits or deities of any kind . So there's no Satan or any other demons/gods/aliens/dragons/gift giving denizens of the north pole wearing red/ghosts/zombies/tooth fairies/other fairies/whatever other silly cloud beings to fill an human's empty void of a life in an atheist's world. The only thing they do believe is that there are nut-bag bossy Christians sending bullshit spam e-mails to bully the rest of us into submission.

Can't vouch for the movies, but I've read the books and, well, for all the fundie abuse J.K. Rowling got, Phillip Pullman was cruising below the radar with books that really deserve it. They're imaginative, they're beautiful...and they are EXTREMELY anti-organized-religion.

Basically he's doing Paradise Lost from a Gnostic point of view and making them YA fantasy. And he's a hell of a writer. (Though I thought the last book was kind of crammed and rushed plotwise).

BTW, I'm convinced J.K. Rowling did the whole "confirm that Dumbledore is Gay" thing in part as a nice parting "fuck you" to the "ban Harry Potter" church lady crowd in the U.S. And good for her.
