More than 1,000 dogs rescued from Virginia puppymill
HILLSVILLE, Va. -- More than 100 dogs arrived at the Washington Animal Rescue League in D.C. Friday, a fraction of more than 1,000 recovered from an alleged puppy mill near Roanoke.

Carroll County officials declared a puppy emergency after the dogs were recovered in order to get the state's emergency officials and the Red Cross to help care for the dogs.

Some of them will soon be up for adoption in the D.C. area.

Most of the dogs at the Washington Animal Rescue League shelter are females who were used for breeding. Most are purebreds: Corgis, King Charles Spaniels, Bichons and Jack Russells.

Some of the dogs are still nursing. They have been placed in foster homes where it's calm, and they will be ready for adoption soon. So far, medical exams show no serious ailments in any of the dogs.

I don't know if anyone has posted about this very sad story. No one should get a dog from a pet store because they get their animals from puppy mills like this. Either a reputable breeder, or from animal shelters.
And if anyone is currently interested in adopting a dog, many of these animals are going to animal shelters from New York to Florida.

1. Bravo!
I detest puppy mills. I've seen signs along roads in my area advertising puppies for $350 and up along with a phone #. I know they just have to be from puppy mills and it makes me sick. The people who run these places should be ashamed of themselves.

2. Poor little puppies. If everyone would just stop buying from them, they would no longer exist.
It is so simple.

3. At least they go them out. Around here they don't seem to get
"found" until they are dead or starving to death.

Missouri is bad, bad for puppy mills.

5. Related: Humane Society: Puppy Mills Breeding Doggy Misery
http://www.nbc4.com/news/14490736/detail.html

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Humane Society said Thursday it has found thousands of puppies living in terrible conditions, with many of them headed for pet stores.

Humane Society officials said they launched the investigation when puppies began turning up sick around Virginia, adding that it was phone calls and e-mails from people whose newly-purchased animals grew sick or died that sparked the investigation. The organization said the investigation began after it received complaints from people who had purchased sick puppies at certain pet stores in Virginia or on the Internet.

The Humane Society of the United States said its investigators found approximately 1,000 large-scale dog-breeding operations where animals were kept in small cages -- all in the rural areas of Virginia.

"You just don't know what you're getting," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States. "Pet stores are often misrepresenting themselves in saying that these are from responsible breeders when we know there are large-scale puppy mill operations. The Internet often advertises, again, responsible breeders, and we have found through this investigation that they are puppy mill operations."

The organization claimed that one facility housed between 500 and 700 dogs, News 4 reported. Most of the operations involved popular small dog breeds, such as Yorkshire terriers and toy poodles.

6. In the last few months there have been two abandoned puppy
mills discovered near where I live.

114 Dogs Found Abandoned in Arkansas Kennel - ‘Puppy Mill’
http://petloverstips.com/ForTheLoveoftheDog/news-updates/114-dogs-found-abandoned-in-arkansas-kennel-puppy-mill

I spoke to a worker at our local humane society about one of these cases recently. She told me that the females had been bred so often that most suffered from prolapsed uterus. All of the dogs are being spayed/neutered before adoption. She also said that most of the dogs had never been socialized and are so timid and shy that they will have to be very careful about the households where these pets are placed. They have been able to place some of the dogs so far, but many of them are going to require months of treatment for various diseases and parasites before they will be eligible for adoption.

They say that what goes around comes around and I hope it comes around to these people realy soon.
