I just got a fund raising call from the RNC
The call was actually intended for a relative who has given a little money to the Republicans and Republican candidates in the past. When I said I was not the person they were calling they said thats OK you can contribute to help up stop Hillary and the liberal Democrats from taking over the government (the canned spiel that they delivered was an anti Hillary rant).

I told the lady the RNC that while I had been a Republican from 1976-2000, I would be supporting the Democratic nominee whoever it was and that while not my first choice I would support Hillary for President. I also told them that Bush had destroyed their party (although in hindsight it is the batshit neocon wing which Bush is the frontman for that is destroying them).

I guess I could have just said no thanks I won't contribute but it felt good to tell them that I not only was not frightened by the idea of Hillary Clinton Clinton for President but would be voting for her (if she is the nominee).

1. Your voice is your power. Real change will come from a Speaking People.
Imagine a world in which ordinary people can think for themselves and speak their true minds (without the **need** to inflict pain or seek revenge). Such a world would be absolutely different from the one we find ourselves in.

Congratulations on taking the somewhat uncomfortable risk and being polite enough about it to be heard through the ugly din. You are a Revolutionary.

2. I wish I would get calls like that!
Damn, I'd give 'em an earful. That would be cathartic.

3. Those calls are fun
Always love the chance to undermine them . . .

A few months ago I got a call from some group that was out to eliminate the Estate Tax. I forget what group, it was a call center that they'd hired to make the calls anyway. The caller read a script full of the usual "death tax" "lose the family farm/business" "big government" talking points. I asked her if she was in line to inherit over $5 million, she said no. She didn't know that only multi-million-dollar estates are taxed. I explained to her the specifics of the Estate tax, the fact that it affects only 3 in 1000 estates, and that no one was ever able to cite an actual "family farm" that was lost by paying any "death tax". I pointed out that she was spending the day calling people to get them to support letting people like Paris Hilton and the Waltons off the hook by making their inheritances tax-free. And that the lost revenue would need to be made up somewhere else, like increased taxes on working people. I then asked her who she thought should get a tax break, Paris Hilton or people who work for a living.

It probably ruined her day. She said she was going to ask for a different assignment at the call center. :D

4. I've gotten those calls
I usually engage them on a personal level. In all cases (4 this year) they have turned out to be young women who are getting paid minimum wage to make these calls. Three eventually volunteered that they don't believe in what the Repugs stand for, but they are desperate for a job due to personal circumstances (kids w/no father in the house). So sad.

6. I act like a stupid republican and ask lots of stupid questions
"I keep voting for one republican after another, so why haven't they taken my guns away yet? They're cluttering up the closet and I need the space"
