Groups testify against sex offender plates
Law enforcement groups, others cite fear of vigilantism, road rage and giving false sense of security

Ohio isn't likely to become the first state in the union to require sex offenders to have special, fluorescent green license plates on their cars or trucks.

The Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association, Buckeye Sheriffs Association and Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police all announced their opposition to the idea, citing concerns about vigilantism, road rage and giving children a false sense of security.

Each group testified this week against a bill sponsored by Sen. Kevin Coughlin, R-Cuyahoga Falls, that would mandate the green plate for rapists and pedophiles on the sexual offender registry.

Other groups opposed to the plates: the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio and the Ohio Association of Child Caring Agencies.

The bill is supported by a Wooster family whose 14-year-old daughter was abducted, raped and murdered by a sex offender living in their neighborhood. They believe green plates would alert Ohioans to dangerous people leaving among them. A similar bill is pending in the House.

1. Wow, how sick is that?
Why not just brand an S into the foreheads of anyone convicted of a sex-related offense? And then they can brand T onto thieves and M onto manslaughter and murder felons and P onto political prisoners.

:sarcasm:

2. I have to agree wholeheartedly
I can just imagine certain people who would go around to "tag 'n' bag" as it were.

Look, these men and women committed a heinous crime, yes. But if they've been released, then the system has judged them to have paid their due. Unless they re-offend, they are no longer criminals.

People should be worried about the sexual predators who haven't been caught, rather than busting their humps to utterly dehumanize and destroy the ones who have been.

3. My first thought was "scarlet letter"
I have sympathy and great compassion for the Wooster family but ... I don't know if this is a good idea.

4. this could create a driving hazard for everyone...
Road rage is real. Nothing that is patently inflammatory belongs on a car.

Look, if you know that someone is so unable to control his sexual compulsions that you're actually considering putting special tags on his car, then why is he out and driving around in the first place?

5. at the very least...
it would be just one more thing to distract drivers from watching the road. You know that so many drivers will be rubbernecking past cars with green license plates, trying to get a look at the driver--either to see if they recognize him or to "see evil" or whatever.

I don't care if the person in the car a few lanes over is a parolee for whatever crime--when I'm driving, I care that everyone has their eyes on the road and on the cars ahead of them.

6. This is asking for horrible, deadly road rage incidents
Sexual predators are scum but in the interest of public safety, please don't do this.

7. I was curious about the "other" states
Scarlet letter license plates for sex offenders

May 2007

USA Today has this article about a new sex offender sanction growing in popularity. The piece is entitled "Sex offenders may get special tags; Eye-catching license plates proposed by lawmakers in Wisconsin, Ohio, Alabama." Here is how it starts:

Lawmakers in three states are pushing bills to require convicted sex offenders to display special license plates on their cars. Proponents in Wisconsin, Ohio and Alabama say the sex offender plates would be another tool to keep the public safe. Critics say the plates would lead to a false sense of security and unintended consequences.

My guess, all of those "To Catch a Predator" MSNBC shows are stirring up the masses or the politicans have found a new platform.

8. Besides, I would imagine that any sex-offender...
...who is going to prowl around looking for a kidnap victim would simply steal a car or change the license plates. This isn't going to stop anything.

What a dumb idea. This is what we elect these dolts to do? Sheesh!!
