Details: Conventional wisdom has it that the Iraq war, the Middle East crisis, and the war on terror are all products of a clash of civilizations between Islam and the West. But according to bestselling investigative journalist Craig Unger, these conflicts should be viewed as part of an entirely different paradigm -- namely, an ongoing war between faith and reason, between fundamentalisms (Islamic, Jewish and Christian) and the modern, scientific, post-Enlightenment world. On November 15, Unger comes to the National Press Club to discuss his new book, Fall of the House of Bush: The Untold Story of How a Band of True Believers Seized the Executive Branch, Started the Iraq War, and Still Imperils America's Future.
In Fall of the House of Bush, Unger explores the roots of the neocon and Christian alliance through scores of interviews with primary figures in the evangelical community and the neoconservative movement, as well as intelligence figures in the CIA, the DIA, and Israel's Mossad and Shin Bet security services. He synthesizes the historical events that have brought us to this point, as well as examining events not yet being widely reported on, such as U.S. military preparations related to Iran.
Formerly deputy editor of The New York Observer, Unger's last book, House of Bush, House of Saud, was a 2004 sleeper hit, spending ten weeks on various bestseller lists, including the New York Times. Now an investigative reporter for Vanity Fair, he is a frequent analyst on CNN and other media outlets, and a past contributor to The New Yorker, Esquire, and other publications.
Fall of the House of Bush will be available for purchase and signing at the event. Admission is free of charge, but space is extremely limited and reservations are required. Send e-mail to opus@press.org to reserve. For additional information, contact Lisa Miller at (202) 662-7564.
