Chinese sub pops up in middle of U.S. Navy exercise, leaving military chiefs red-faced
American military chiefs have been left dumbstruck by an undetected Chinese submarine popping up at the heart of a recent Pacific exercise and close to the vast U.S.S. Kitty Hawk - a 1,000ft supercarrier with 4,500 personnel on board. By the time it surfaced the 160ft Song Class diesel-electric attack submarine is understood to have sailed within viable range for launching torpedoes or missiles at the carrier.

According to senior Nato officials the incident caused consternation in the U.S. Navy.
The Americans had no idea China's fast-growing submarine fleet had reached such a level of sophistication, or that it posed such a threat.

One Nato figure said the effect was "as big a shock as the Russians launching Sputnik" - a reference to the Soviet Union's first orbiting satellite in 1957 which marked the start of the space age.

Whoa, the Chinese have been working.

3. too busy spying on Americans to spy on Chinese?
Is that it? Our intelligence services are so worried about Americans who are buying falafel mix that they have no time to keep up with military buildup in the world?

9. Those diesel-electric subs are very quiet -
Edited on Sat Nov-10-07 05:17 PM by haele
And with a well-disciplined crew, could be near undetectable - just as undetectable as our nuke subs running silent. I'm just wondering where our subs were; they'd be most likely to detect the Chinese coming near.

BTW, I understand that the Chinese have recently sold the Iranians some subs. Wonder if this is a shakedown cruise for something one of our fleets may be facing in the Persian Gulf pretty soon...

Food for thought - diesel-electric subs are most effective in "brown water" - like the Baltic, Mediterranian, Gulf of Mexico, Persian Gulf...

10. This article said it made it past 12 US warships.
"One official said that based on the ease at which the submarine avoided 12 U.S. warships to surface near a 1,000-foot carrier, Navy officials are reconsidering the potential dangers posed by Chinese subs."

It didn't specify subs.

15. There are usually one or more submarines assigned to a Carrier Task group.
Even during exercises - SOP. Depending on what was going on during this "exercise" and where it took place, it's a 80% chance there should have been a LA Class sub nearby. If it was close to a major US Navy Base, there might not have been a sub, but again - what was a Chinese sub doing un detected so close to either a Task Group underway or a major base?

Just my experience musing here.

12. It made it past at least 2 US subs:
"Two submarines were also in place, along with other advanced technology, which also failed to detect the intruding watercraft."

11. Oh dear, a new "travelling companion" (sputnik) for the 21st Century.
Those diesel-electrics can be quiet, but they can't stay down forever. But if anyone's gonna 'go Navy' it's the Chinese in this century, notwithstanding the Russkie traditions.

This could get interesting, but not in a good way.

14. Oh no! Another BOOGEYMAN!
Attack! Invade! Spend trillions on more guns and bombs! Something must be done about the Chinese "threat"!

This is yet another xenophobic fear mongering piece.
