1. huh?
I'm presuming McCain said something re: Jesus and Muslims, but it would help if you gave a link so people would know what you're talking about.

2. I can neither confirm nor deny what you presume.
I'm simply asking two questions at once and providing a variety of combinations of answers. There's not necessarily any relationship between the two questions. However, asking them together helps calibrate the meaning of the word "Muslim" and ensure that any slippage in meaning is noticed.

7. Is this link good enough?

politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2007/09/30/mccain-i-would-vote-for-muslim-president/

(After you cut and paste the above, you need to put "http://" at the front of it.)

If you read that article, you will see that McCain is quoted as saying something like this:

I would vote for a Muslim presidential candidate. Religion should play a role in one's selection of a presidential candidate.

I would also be willing to vote for a Mormon presidential candidate. I am not currently a practicing Mormon, but I am impressed by the founder of Mormonism, Joseph Smith. He used force to try to shut down unfavorable press coverage and I admire that kind of policy whether it comes from a Mormon or an Ashcroft.

Of course, there was no time for Joseph Smith to try to press charges for defamation. He had the leadership to act fast and not worry about dotting all the i's and crossing all the t's. Everybody knows that polygamy has never had anything to do with Mormonism. It's just slander from outsiders who never had any inside knowledge of Mormonism.

Joseph Smith wasn't perfect. However, he was like a combination of Howard Carter, Michael Ventris, and Charles Parham. Naturally, I therefore respect and admire the religion that he founded.

Disclaimer:
I cannot guarantee that the above quotation of Senator John McCain's words is 100% accurate, both because CNN is not necessarily reliable and because I decided to paraphrase Senator McCain's comments for clarity.

4. Islam begin in the 7th Century AD and so it was not even concieved
...until 700 years after the death of Jesus Christ. A follower of the faith of Islam is called a Muslim, so I don't understand where this idea that Jesus was a Muslim could have come from, since Islam as a religion did not occur for some 700 years after Jesus walked the earth.

6. A Google search for "Jesus was a Muslim" produces "about 79,400" results.

8. That does not make it a fact unless of course Jesus was in fact the Prophet Muhammad
...as well as Jesus Christ. Can you produce just one site that claims that to be true?

10. Should I produce a new poll thread with additional options?
I figured that a "none of the above" would be enough to catch any voting preference that I failed to specifically include as an option.

14. See post #2 for an explanation of why it can be helpful to
ask two questions at once.

As a donor, I feel that GD is not off limits to me and I feel free to start an occasional thread in GD. I rarely cut and paste large blocks of text, so I'm not sure what motivates your concern about space on DU.

17. I did not vote. What opinion did I express?
Perhaps you should direct your question to those who voted: what is the source of their opinions?

19. "Question statements" sounds like an oxymoron to me.
I provided a variety of options, including a "none of the above option." If you would like to compose an additional option, then I will seriously consider including it in a future poll (but of course, I will not be able to say that I composed it).

22. Sorry, it's too late for additional recommendations for this thread.
However, there is hope. I might post threads on related topics in the future. While they are fresh, there will be a chance to recommend them to the Greatest Page.
