Israeli official warns of nuclear 'apocalypse'
By Agence France Presse (AFP)

Saturday, November 10, 2007

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM: Egyptian and Saudi nuclear ambitions, on top of Iran's atomic drive, will lead to an "apocalyptic scenario," a senior Israeli Cabinet minister said in comments published on Friday. "If Egypt and Saudi Arabia begin nuclear programs, this can bring an apocalyptic scenario upon us," Strategic Affairs Minister Avigdor Lieberman told the English-language Jerusalem Post newspaper. "Their intentions should be taken seriously and the declarations being made now are to prepare the world for when they decide to actually do it," said the minister, responsible for coordinating Israeli efforts against a nuclear Iran.

On October 29, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak announced a program to build several nuclear power stations. Jordan, one of only two Arab countries with Egypt to have signed peace deals with Israel, as well as Algeria, Libya, Yemen and all six pro-Western Gulf states including Saudi Arabia have also announced peaceful nuclear ambitions.

Lieberman, who heads the ultra-nationalist Yisrael Beitenu party, also told the Jerusalem Post that Pakistan could pose a major threat to Israel. "If the Taliban or bin Laden get control , they will have nuclear weapons for terror use and they don't hide their opinions about Israel," he said.

On Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz called for ElBaradei to be removed as head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, saying he had turned a blind eye to Iran's nuclear ambitions. Mofaz headed discussions with the US this week on forming two working joint committees in order to hone a joint strategy against Iran's nuclear ambitions, public radio reported on Friday.- AFP

1. Iran wants nuclear technology, the neocons turned that into wanting a weapon.
Big difference in my view.

3. No, they want weapons. That's not spin--that's what they're after.
Can't blame them--that's how you gain regional and international power and respect.

8. The other countries nuclear plans are viewed the same as Iran's
Egypt's plans for three nuclear plants are also being viewed by this guy as a threat. Same with Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Jordan, etc.

Israel views any nuclear technology in Islamic countries as a threat.

2. fuck them
their dep. minister comes back from a US visit, proclaiming an upcoming war on Iran. They have caused more problems than the US citizen ever hears about. Their bribers in AIPAC have screwed up our foreign policy more than our generation will ever know.

13. 'Their bribers in AIPAC'?
Israelis aren't members of AIPAC.

You sound just as paranoid about Israel, as the RW-ers are about Iran.

Israel is in the same position as the UK. A collaborator in a bad foreign policy (actually the UK, I'm ashamed to say, have collaborated more actively); not the cause of it.

Personally, I think that America, the UK, Iran, Israel and everywhere have lots of reason to be paranoid about Bush, Cheney and their cronies!

and every single Israeli PM has given awards, hugs and more to AIPAC leaders, and to those top congresscritters that AIPAC bought and brought over to Israel.

6. Avigdor Lieberman is himself a nutcase...
but in the case of Pakistan, he's probably not the only person to be a bit worried about such an unstable country having nukes.

I don't like the idea of Iran having them either; but it's interesting that Bush seems totally focused on this one 'bogeynation', and has seemed so unconcerned about the tinder-box situation in Pakistan.

10. Shouldn't think so. And I don't recommend bombing anywhere!!!
There's been too much of it already.

And the Israeli government could do with a complete Avigdor-Lieberman-ectomy anyway. He's a right-wing loony!!!

I just thought it was a bit ironic that Bush has been so obsessed with Iran possibly having nukes in 10 years' time, and so unconcerned about Pakistan having them already.

12. but Pakistan or Russia could fire nukes at Israel?
so if Iran is 8-10 years of making one?

it would be better to get around the table and make peace.
