Would Mitt Romney have an advantage in Michigan?
Massachusettes is so blue, and Mitt's approval ratings are so low that I think Mitt would lose MA against any Dem candidate. But does he have an edge in MI? His dad was MI's governor from 1963–1969. Maybe that is why Mitt announced he was running for Pres in MI.

The good thing is that MI is trending Dem.

Michigan:
'88: Bush (53.57 - 45.67) = + 0.18% Republican (compared to nat'l popular vote)
'92: Clinton (43.77 - 36.38) = + 1.83% Democratic (compared to nat'l popular vote)
'96: Clinton (51.69 - 38.48) = + 4.68% Democratic (compared to nat'l popular vote)
'00: Gore (51.28 - 46.14) = + 4.63% Democratic (compared to nat'l popular vote)
'04: Kerry (51.23 - 47.81) = + 5.88% Democratic (compared to nat'l popular vote)

1. Who alive in Michigan still remebers Romney as governor? After all, it was 1969.
Probably think that it is the same doofus.

2. Michigan has an "aging population."
Indeed, it's regarded as a problem that the younger, college-educated people are leaving the state for the "sun belt" where the quality of life appeals to them. The decaying infrastructure of Michigan is a self-amplifying problem.

That said, I remember Romney. He wasn't the worst ever Governor but, after Soapy Williams (D) and John Swainson (D), he sure paved the way for some totally abysmal and corrupt people -- Bill Milliken (R) being a notable (and excellent) exception.

3. Was Romney much better than Engler?
Engler is as far back as my memory goes. He stunk.

5. In a very close election
Maybe the affective tie felt by some old enough to remember his dad as governor (I wasn't born then) might give him a minimal boost, but I doubt it would be one that would even be statistically significant.

6. My daughter's civics teacher (a puke) has been touting Mitt
for many MONTHS now.

Michigan puglicans are behind him until they
are told to get behind someone else.....
