106-year old WWI veteran speaks on the Iraq war.

This weekend, Frank W. Buckles, traveled to Arlington National Cemetary for a ceremony honoring his service in World War I. Buckles, 106 years old, is one of just three known suriving World War I veterans. Asked about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Buckles told the Washington Post, “I’m no authority, but I’m not in favor of war unless it’s an emergency.”

2. Men who have actually SEEN war know it's hell...
Here's a vintage pic of Cpl Buckles:

...and a pic of him in 2004 - still looking good:

To your continued health, Corporal!:toast::patriot:

3. What a shame that practical wisdom can be found everywhere but in Washington.
The Cheney's flock of chicken-hawks, and 6 years of a bobble-head Congress have sure turned reason on its head, and have done unimaginable damage to the very core of this once proud nation.

4. Expect Rush to call him a "phony soldier" tomorrow.
On second thought, Slimebaugh will just ignore him.

9. I'm curious as to why he fought in WWI, the most pointless war of all time
Edited on Tue Nov-13-07 06:15 AM by provis99
Sure wasn't an "emergency" war the way I understand it. The history books seem to indicate that the nations and citizens went to war on the belief that it would be great fun (cheering in the streets when war was announced, and all that).

11. There was a draft
and our history books are mainly propaganda. There was widespread, sometimes violent opposition to WWI in the United States, which is why Debs ran his 1920 presidential campaign from jail.

13. If you were Serbian or Austro-Hungarian there seemed to be reason
I guess Russia thought there was reason too, given that they are so close with Serbia. Germany, France, UK, etc. really should have stayed out. The US had no reason to join as late as 1917

10. The Germans were starting to attack our shipping
Of course, we could have just limited it to a naval war...

12. Did the British allow us to ship to Germany?
Why respect one blockade and not the other?

14. Were we shipping to Germany?
I honestly don't know. I thought that we stopped shipping to Germany when hostilities broke out.

15. We were until the British told us and everyone else that whoever tried would be stopped by force
That's what blockading is all about.
