The standard is not very high to find probable cause exists to support the charges and set the case for trial. However, the standard for conviction is much higher --'beyond a reasonable doubt.'
It is very rare indeed for serious charges to be dismissed outright at a Probable Cause Hearing. In this case, the Probable Cause Hearing served several very valuable functions.
Witnesses have now been 'pinned down' under oath as to their various versions of the events leading to the criminal charges against OJ. So if at trial they deviate in the slightest from their testimony at this hearing, their credibility will be shredded.
OJ's defense counsel was able to hear the State's version of the case, and now can spend time reviewing all the available evidence and interview other witnesses to see if the State's case matches up with the charges brought against OJ.
OJ's defense counsel can now gauge the strength of the State's case, and in the defense's cross-examiation of the witnesses the defense counsel has demonstrated to the State certain deficiencies in their case. So the State may offer a more lenient plea offer, and OJ's defense attorneys can more adequately advise him of the possible various outcomes and then make a recommendation as to whether he should plead or go to trial.
I hope this helps people better understand how this process works.
