Soiled

It is almost as though they saw this day coming. It’s as if they knew that one day, they would be in a position to control everything… for a while. It’s as if they knew they would have this power, not just to exercise and execute their will, but it is as if they knew they would abuse it one day. It’s almost as though they knew that one day, in the not-too-distant future, they would put someone in power who would commit such egregious crimes, such horrific violations of the Constitution, International Law, and morality itself, that they realized that ‘someone’ would be subject to one of the most powerful and critical tools America’s forefathers had so deliberately included in our Constitutional toolbox;

Impeachment.

Alone, that tool was beyond sacrosanct; it was the emergency extinguisher in the event of a fire, the flashlight in a blackout, the emergency generator, the first aid kit, the emergency flares… it was the cure for the cancer that would kill our Democracy. It was an absolute necessity.

It could not be blatantly or blithely removed. It could never be discarded or thrown out. The mere suggestion of doing so, the thought of it expressed in even the quietest whisper would betray the monstrous intentions of those who were ultimately inimical to our Founder’s Democracy.

No, it could never be disposed of. The only solution to the problem of this tool therefore became an assault not on it, but on the very use of it.

So they spent tens of millions of our own dollars, thousands of hours of labor, and every ounce of imagination they could muster creating a little pool of pure, unadulterated, festering garbage. They dug up vast swaths of land, tore through forests of paper, and even extracted as much fecal matter from anyone unfortunate enough to be close to their target as they could… and all for just a few buckets full of rancid refuse.

Then they took that venerable, crucial, lifesaving saber of grace down from the mantle and plunged it right into that pool of filth in front of the entire world. They used it to spread the fetor of bile and rancor across Our Land. It became a tool to fill our televisions and newspapers, our internet and radio, even our very homes, our minds, with acrid, foul disgust.

It became soiled.

They soiled Democracy’s most crucial tool, a tool meant for salvation and healing, by using it to smear a sitting president with allegations that had absolutely nothing to do with his performance in office. They used it not to right wrongs, or restore constitutionality, but to cheapen, degrade, dull, and soil it so that no one would want to pick it up and bear that stench again… no matter how critical to our own survival as a nation it became.

So there it sits, covered in years-old filth, while we watch in horror as our Democracy fails.

We beg, we plead with our representatives to take it up, but they are convinced they will foul their already tarnished hands and lose favor with their constituents. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Those who would plunge forward through the filth, take it up, and cleanse it in the waters of true purpose once again to save our Democracy will have the very deepest respect that was lost to those who soiled it in the first place. The spoilers paid the price not for using impeachment, but for tarnishing it. To bring it forth and use it for its’ rightful purpose; to rid the land of this plague that is killing our values, our standing, our Constitution, and our finest young men and women, will cleanse the process once again, and restore that vital instrument to honor.

One man has dared pull it from the wretchedness in which it has lain and begun to clean it off. He needs help and we must urge the rest to help, and explain why until they cannot ignore the truth.

For if we do not, right now, then we face more torture, more war, more death, and the very end of our beloved Democracy.

If we allow such a travesty to occur, then there can be no escape from the sad, inexorable fate;

And we will all become soiled.

1. Oh.My.God.
This is an incredibly wonderful piece, written with the passion only a true sense of purpose can inflame.

I regret that I only have one REC to give to my countryman, who has spoken so eloquently and truthfully on my behalf, and on behalf of a nation we all hold so dear.

Thank you, sir.

9. Thank you.
You know how much it means to hear that.

Angry cannot begin to describe it. Even through the outrage fatigue I am on the verge of tears as every particle of me quietly screams for justice.

These people really don't understand the sort of thing they're messing with in the American People.

I pray they do not fail to realize it before it is too late.

Thanks Nance.

87. I'm sporadic, but really pissed off.
The only reason I remain a registered Republican these days is so I can have some small effect on primary elections. I believed in it once; there were values of conservatism that made sense, even though I was never anything but moderate. There were values of Republicanism that made sense, but those values have long since been become allusory rather than actual.

I now regretfully look forward to the demise of the party that once stood for civil, individual rights. When that dirge is finally played, I will likely re-register as a Democrat. Even then, I will not, I cannot take for granted as interminable those values that these Democrats represent, for we're all quite familiar with what happened to the Republicans in the thrall of the corporate complex;

"Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely."

I have come to find many here who've donned the jersey of the Democratic party to be transcendent of party or team loyalty. These are the ones who will stay with the Democrats so long as the Democrats stay with the people. I have reason to believe that the vast majority here would readily, and perhaps even handily, take back the Party of The People should it go astray... for that is what I have learned of today's 'Progressives'. Indeed, one cannot stand in the way of progress without great consequences.

I pray that We The People will realize the great deception that has been perpetrated upon us before it is too late to save my beloved Country, but I shall not lie down while she is beaten and violated so. I swear to God, I will pay any price before I give up on restoring her to the glory of our Founder's brilliance.

Anyone who doesn't like that can "Go Fuck Themselves". I'm merely one, and in this life I've had all I've truly needed. They fear me. They fear us... and they know who 'they' are.

We will win. One way or another, the divine spirit of humanity to reach out and become so much more will defeat the forces that wish us to be slaves. Their only solution is to exterminate themselves along with the rest of us.

They cannot win.

Their quest for control is proof of their fear.

Their fear will lead them to their own demise.

We, the human race, will shed that fear... we will win.

I hope my continuation was understood.

Thank you 'Ghost Dog'.

BTW... that was one of the best movies I've ever seen. I love Forrest Whitaker.

13. Yes.
I have always thought the same. A very long term plan that finally came to fruition.

But the phenomenon of unwillingness is what boggles my mind. There's a fire. And yet no one dare risk embarrassment by speaking up. Only the most vigilant. Only the most open and brave. Those like Dennis Kucinich. Those like US. WE are those patriotic fire fighters. And there is risk involved. But we know what risk is greatest.

You really said it well. And it's time for Americans to get over it and come to the rescue of their country. Forget partisan grounding. I don't care what political bend the office holder is. It's time to hear the alarm bell.

Right on. I see hope.

PS- Trifecta comes to mind. And I mean Giulliani. And he's on the ropes as far as I'm concerned. Because he was next in line. A lineage of fascism. I want this stopped.

24. Firstly, K & R. Secondly, I understand where you are coming from but
I think you have it wrong.

Ben Franklin said, "Drive thy business or it will drive thee", that is, the employer does not beg nor plead for his employees to do their jobs. The employer enters into an agreement allowing employees to carry out certain functions of a business in exchange for consideration. Employees may, and should, bargain for the type and amount of that consideration, but the function fulfilled by the employees is defined by the employer.

Unfortunately we have forgotten the relationship between citizens and representatives that is mandated in our Constitution. We have submitted to the notion that they are our rulers, and because of this, have surrendered our authority and acquiesced to a false subservience.

They do not fear losing the favor of their constituents, they know full well that is not so. They fail in their duty, not because of fear, but through lust for power and lack of accountability. They see themselves wielding the tools of tyranny and know that we will continue to bow down and simply do as we are told. We have neglected our business, living on the proceeds of previous generation's work and a reputation that lingers from a bygone era for far too long. So long that we believe it is our due and refuse to re-engage in directing that business.

We lost our Democracy in December of 2000 and most did not care, act, or even notice. Seven years later, a woefully small minority is even aware that a coup took place in this country and we are subject to the illegal rule of a cabal. Few will even say it, and those that do are labeled extremists, wackos, fringe, etc., and dismissed out of hand or worse.

The man you write about has my full, unqualified support, but I also know that he is not able to save us from our own neglect by himself. He has sounded the warning for over a decade and garnered little support even from within his own party. Almost anonymous outside his district, roundly ignored, belittled, and ridiculed by the powers that be, including those within his party, they have made it clear that he will have no support from them.

I guess the point is that we are soiled. So soiled that we have grown accustomed to it and no longer have any desire to bathe.

:kick: & R

61. Fundamental correction: we have not turned our representatives into rulers, but our parties.
We are told over and over again that the one and only thing that matters is that we elect Democrats. It does not matter how corrupt our party's candiates are; it does not matter how holden they are to corporate interests; it does not matter how well they represent our values or whether they are willing to promote the party's platform. The one and only thing that does matter is that they have a 'D' after their names. Over and over again, we are directed not to think for ourselves and instead be good sheep and do as we are told.

And sadly, that is what the vast majority of us do. We have given up the sovereignty of being a citizen in a democracy and instead become a rubberstamp to the party leaders. Just look at the primary race: Most everyone here on DU has expressed great admiration for Dennis Kucinich, we have put him far in the lead on the fun drive. But come the primaries and caucuses, what will we do? We will dismiss him because the party elders do not want him, and we will vote as ordered.

THAT is where the problem lies.

This is outstanding, thank you. Here's the problem. A majority of the people who would impeach are in on all the crimes - Iraq, FISA, etc. To indict Bush it to indict themselves.

Nevertheless, the victors write the history and they'd better get on the winning side by doing this.

I agree with you main thrust but our fate is not 'inexorable.' There will be a change and the follow up ("blow back") will be much more volatile than what we're looking at now with impeachment. Moribund and decadent governments rarely take the intelligent choice. For example, South Africa would have much wiser to deal with Steve Biko than the were to ignore and destroy him. We'll see but thanks Dr.

The VRWC in action. Followed by Theft 2000, LIHOP, Constitution as TP, Iraqnam. Pretty sordid.

Excellent post!

60. Very nice piece, Doc.
I said something similar a little while ago after hearing John Nichols speak on impeachment.

Impeachment is not about Republicans and Democrats. Impeachment was never meant to be a form of “gotcha politics” or the equivalent of a teacher’s ruler rapping the knuckles of a student. Impeachment is not about vindication, but rather a validation that the principles of the balance of power will remain secure. If the crimes and abuses of power by the president and the vice president are allowed to continue with no accountability, then where might we find ourselves twenty years from now?

As Nichols also said, “What a shame it would be for this country to look back on the Bush years as the good old days.”

Thank you so much for sharing your talent and reminding some of us what passion sounds like.

particularly when he hear people like Pelosi and the centrist Clinton supporters place Democratic politics first. Its as if they have come to the conclusion that few people in the nation care about the Constitution anymore, as if it really has just become a historical piece of paper. Soon they may be changing the oaths of office. I sincerely hope this is not true.

Dear Sir,

Keith Olberman, during his "special commentary" wouldn't do justice of what's been delivered through your hands.

Worst fears, Speaker of the House would not do justice by its delivery to her.

I am truly crying with you. We all need to cry with you.

 MMM

79. Soiled
The Founding Fathers didn't intend for impeachment to be used
as rarely as it has been. They understood that people will be
people, crooks will be crooked, and incompetents will be
imcompetent. The impeachment of Clinton was a joke, and we all
(except some delusional Republicans) knew it. But I think it
struck Democratic politicians with fear because they saw how
unpopular Clinton's impeachment was. However, they don't seem
to understand why that impeachment was so unpopular, i.e., it
was obviously politically motivated. The impeachment of Bush
and/or Cheney isn't or won't be. That impeachment is to
preserve (the word in the oaths that is always left out),
protect and defend the Constitution. And our future.

Cheers

82. Well said! Impeachment should be utilized much more frequently,
just as the Founders intended, and as you noted. They left us the tools and we can't find them in the shed. Definitely time to clean house (and shed).

First post? wow! Welcome! :toast:

84. Well said. I send my weekly letters (by snail mail - they get more attention) to Congress
and express absolute OUTRAGE that our constitution has been hijacked. Yes, hijacked. Typing that word has probably rendered me once again to the "subversives list" in one of those great old buildings in DC. I want my country back.
