Al Gore: A Speculation
And it's a wild one, I'll admit. But please bear with me and give it the benefit of the doubt, as we can't be quick to assume anything in these... interesting times.

First off lets look at what we know: The deadlines for enrolling in the states Dem primaries is fast approaching and in some cases already passing by, emails from his staff have asked the draft efforts to stop, and he STILL won't give us a straight yes or no answer.

Suppose he knows he has no chance in the primaries at this point? He understands that 'the fix is in' as they say, and that he won't get the nomination as long as a DLC friendly candidate is in the running. So he waits, and passes up the chance to enroll in the primaries, and stops others from drafting him.

Later, when the likely nominees are chosen (Hillary and Giuliani, we'll say) and most voters don't like either of them and everything is still going to hell, America will have likely reached a boiling point. Being completely outraged against the administration and all of congress from the left to the right, Gore then jumps in as an independent and kicks both the candidates to the curb. This would explain why he didn't even try for the Dem nomination: if he were on the primary ballot as a Dem, he wouldn't be able to do this, as many states have laws against it.

Or in a less extreme case, he may just want to wait a couple weeks more until he announces on his own time and his own terms. Things could have changed a good deal in even that amount of time, and his chances may even improve by that point. That a couple primaries have been passed up wouldn't be near enough to stop him with enough popular support.

And that venture capital deal? I don't think its as much a sign of making plans away from running for office as one might think. The real power in this country right now is that of money, and getting a motive of profit behind an environmental agenda would do wonders to drive a run by Al Gore.

I know it seems pretty out there, and is a solid example of wishful thinking (and probably involves a certain river in Egypt). But I feel it's important to remember that things are quickly changing in this country, what with the imminent threats of political, economic and environmental collapse. The revolution of awareness that is underway is accelerating just as quickly, and all of it seems to be coming to a head simultaneously. When it does... well I don't know how or when it will play out, but it will be soon and it will be drastic. That will be the time of action and change, and I trust Al Gore to see it at least as well anyone else, and plan accordingly.

The real big problems with this idea is that it is risky, regardless of what strategy goes into it the longer he waits the harder it gets. That, and a run by Al Gore as anything but a Democrat would cause DU to spontaneously combust. :)
