I am so proud of Nancy Pelosi.
I am proud of her because tonight, she had to interact with criminals during a national ritual and she managed it with grace and poise.

We disagree often. Often. And in particular, I think she's dead wrong about impeachment.

But tonight, she handled a historic first with intelligence and ability. This was a very important night for American women, for all Americans as half of us were let a little bit more into a more co-equal balance of power.

Thank you, Nancy. You make me proud of my San Francisco Values. Even if I have to remind you sometimes that we really do hold them dear.

lol

:toast: to our Madame Speaker

27. My 10 yr old grand daughter was thrilled ...
she asked if 'the boys were finally not afraid to let the girls play on the field'! (She's a little sportswoman - softball, soccer, everything!) She was awed that 'a girl' was getting the chance to show what she could do - it's so important for the kids coming up to have role models like Pelosi & Boxer.

She's certain that the only reason the men didn't want women to 'play' is because they're afraid the girls will WHIP THEIR ASSES!

I'm proud of our Speaker tonight. She not only gives me hope, she gives hope to both of my grand daughters.

Brava!

48. The look in those big, round eyes & the hushed tone of her voice ...
when Madame Speaker took office:

took my breath away to witness
broke my heart that she had felt slighted
made me so proud that she was so aware
made me angry that she had to wait so long
and more

All at once.

I think at that moment she felt her future get just a little more open ... a little less confining. I hope she's never let down in that.

And hearing "that's for boys!" I've been there for all of 'em -

No woman will EVER work on my job site!
You have to have a man co-sign for a loan!
My personal fav ... "Wheeerrrre is your husband!?" (used when the speaker is on the losing side of a disagreement w/me & wants male reinforcement!)

& on, & on & on.

On the plus side, my grandson says he would rather have a woman on his side in a fight - they're tougher & meaner when they're mad!

She seemed taken abck that Shrub actually made a big deal of her being the first woman Speaker of the House. I think Cheney secretly liked that he got to sit next to Nancy instead of that old blimp Denny Hastert. As the mother of two little girls, I was really proud to watch her in that chair. That was the biggest story tonight.

Somehow, despite all the drooling, hating 33%ers, we do inch forward. Tonight was one of those sweet inches.

56. I felt bad for her
It would be so hard that behind that man and be forced to clap for things that you know are bad, but are worded in a way which makes you look bad if you don't applaud. The whole speech so carefully worded to make sure that people would clap for even his most unpopular positions by throwing a "support our troops" or "we must stand up for freedom" at the end of every sentence.

God it made me sick, and there were certainly times when I was wishing they didn't take the bait and kept still in their seats. I know it is a very tough situation however, especially for Pelosi who was in the eye of the camera through the entire speech and was forced to carefully contemplate what to clap for and what not to clap for. You could tell that sometimes when she clapped she did not want to clap but felt she had to.

Edited on Wed Jan-24-07 12:27 PM by Marnieworld
I started to cry. I think of all of the women who have come before us and how this is their legacy. I thought about how nice it must be for all of the little girls everywhere to live in this country now and how they can just expect to be included. I told my husband that it was a Jackie Robinson moment for me- that even though I may not agree with some of her tactics at the moment, I can't do anything but celebrate this moment for Pelosi, for all of us. Even with the Chimperor at the podium it still was a good day for America.

Imagine how good it will feel when a woman is President? (not an endorsement for a current female candidate ;) )
