No more "ho ho ho" for Oz Santas.....
OK. Imus = despicable.

Santa? Come on!

=====

SYDNEY (AFP) - Santas in Australia's largest city have been told not to use Father Christmas's traditional "ho ho ho" greeting because it may be offensive to women, it was reported Thursday.

Sydney's Santa Clauses have instead been instructed to say "ha ha ha" instead, the Daily Telegraph reported.

One disgruntled Santa told the newspaper a recruitment firm warned him not to use "ho ho ho" because it could frighten children and was too close to "ho", a US slang term for prostitute.

"Gimme a break," said Julie Gale, who runs the campaign against sexualising children called Kids Free 2B Kids.

"We are talking about little kids who do not understand that "ho, ho, ho" has any other connotation and nor should they," she told the Telegraph.

"Leave Santa alone."

A local spokesman for the US-based Westaff recruitment firm said it was "misleading" to say the company had banned Santa's traditional greeting and it was being left up to the discretion of the individual Santa himself.

1. You have got to be kidding me.
This is just flat out insane. Things like this make me truly believe there is no hope for humanity, none at all.

Honestly, just when you think you have seen it all.

17. Seeing as it was a Rupert Murdoch rag that started the story in the first place, I'd say
that the whole point of the story was as fodder for the culture warriors.

or must they use a less suggestive entrance?

5. I remember some feminists complaining about "trick or treat"
Edited on Thu Nov-15-07 03:46 AM by policypunk
saying it was social conditioning that introduced girls to the sexual economy of prostitution and it was an easy leap from trick or treating in a sexy costume to blowing guys behind dumpsters for drugs or some such nonsense.

Ahh... college, but the professor offered a 5% bonus on our final grades for every male student who showed up for the gender studies symposium so I got some laughs and a B+.

9. Sounds a bit iffy to me.
For starters "ho" is not slang for prostitute in Australia.
Secondly if you say "not" to do something, it is more likely to be done.

And as you know, if it's slang in America, it must be everywhere else. ;)

12. Isn't "ho" just an inarticulate person's attempt to say
"whore".
I suspect that some santas will be saying "whore" "whore" "whore".
Or maybe they'll sing a version of the Who song: "who're you".
I'll stop now.

20. well, Westaff (the firm involved) denied it
But, then again, the fact that the story originated in Rupert Murdoch's outrage factory, I'd say it's half-debunked to start with :)

http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/story/2007/11/15/ho-ho.html

Westaff denied the whole thing.

"Santas trained by Westaff have not been banned from saying 'ho, ho, ho,' " the firm said in a statement posted on its website.

"Westaff has had 40 years experience in the training and provision of quality caring Santas in Australia and New Zealand," it said. "Westaff Santas are fully trained, police checked, reference checked and presented in the highest quality and authentic Santa suits.

"We believe the training we give our Santas is of the highest quality and this is reflected in the many happy moments which they provide to thousands of children across Australia and New Zealand each Christmas," the statement said.

"At no time has Westaff directed its Santas not to use 'ho ho ho.'"

It's got all the stink of a BS story intended to rile up the O'Reilly crowd.

Come to think of it, I bet he opens tonight's show with this turd.

18. WTF???
"Ho" is American urban slang. Is its use really so predominant in Australia? Do they even have widespread mall Santas in AU? I thought that too was primarily an American thing. Honestly, I thought others had better sense.

This sounds weird.

23. well, take it with a grain of salt
The story started as a basically-unattributed assertion in a tabloid run by Rupert Murdoch. :)

The whole point, it seems to me, is to try to make people roll their eyes at "political correctness run amok" with the added benefit of defending santa from the war on Christmas.
