Bangladesh on cyclone warning
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/7095763.stm

<snip>
Tens of thousands of people have left coastal districts of Bangladesh as a severe cyclone heads in across the Bay of Bengal, officials say.

Operations have been suspended at the main ports of Mongla and Chittagong, and people are being moved away from high-risk areas.

More than 40,000 policemen, soldiers, coastguards and health workers have been deployed along the coast.

The cyclone is expected to make landfall in the next few hours.

With winds of 200km (120 miles) an hour, the cyclone - expected to make landfall around 1200 GMT - may also affect eastern Indian and the west coast of Burma.

1. goodmorning, malaise.
yes, this storm is a monster. It's now a cat 5 with winds of 155 mph. I'm apprehensive about the damage it will cause in Bangladesh. Hundreds of thousands of lives are at risk. I'm not much of one for praying, but this isn't a bad time to toss some prayers out into the universe.

3. Good morning cali
This is a bad one and Bangladesh is oh so vulnerable. At least people are moving away from their homes on the coast.

2. It just struck me....
They have managed to evacuate the coast of Bangladesh, one of the poorest countries in the world. And we couldn't get our people out of the Gulf Coast, in one of the richest countries in the world.

My heart goes out to them. I hope they make it through with minimal loss of life.

4. History is a great teacher
Remember this region had serious floods in June of this year and never forget that Bangladesh lost over 300,000 citizens in a cyclone in 1970.

Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries on the planet.

5. I know
Even as I was writing it, I knew that it was a terribly futile hope, but I really don't know what else to say. I feel terribly helpless and I cannot do anything to help them right now, so all I have is "My heart goes out to them".
