Gonzales Defense Fund Set Up
Former Attorney General's Legal Fees Mount in Probe

By Dan Eggen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, November 15, 2007; Page A03

Supporters of former attorney general Alberto R. Gonzales have created a trust fund to help pay for his legal expenses, which are mounting in the face of an ongoing Justice Department investigation into whether Gonzales committed perjury or improperly tampered with a congressional witness.

The establishment of a legal defense fund for the nation's former chief law enforcement officer underscores the potential peril confronting Gonzales, who is one of a handful of attorneys general to face potential criminal charges for actions taken in office.

David G. Leitch, a Gonzales friend and general counsel at the Ford Motor Co., wrote in an e-mail solicitation to potential contributors last month that Gonzales is "innocent of any wrongdoing" but does not have the means to pay for his legal defense after a career spent mostly in public service.

"In the hyper-politicized atmosphere that has descended on Washington, an innocent  man cannot simply trust that the truth will out," Leitch wrote. "He must engage highly competent legal counsel to represent him. That costs money, money that Al Gonzales doesn't have."

Leitch also wrote that Gonzales's attorney, George J. Terwilliger III of White & Case in Washington, "has substantially reduced his fees to represent Al Gonzales, but the costs will likely be high nonetheless." A contribution form asking for donations to the Alberto R. Gonzales Legal Expense Trust suggests amounts from $500 to $5,000.

4. Problem: "In the hyper-politicized atmosphere...man cannot simply trust that the truth will out"
Yes, that rather flatly states the crime/problem Gonzo created for himself, albeit at the behest of his superior.

Of course, we must investigate everyone that contributes too now!

5. Why does Fredo need a legal defense fund?
After he's convicted in open court after a fair trial, his former boss will just pardon him or commute his sentence, like he did for Scooter. Gonzales could hire some guy in a rodeo clown suit who juggles and hits himself in the face with a cream pie throughout the trial, and it wouldn't matter. But it's an absolute fact that in George W. Bush's Washington, the truth doesn't come out very often, because it's been quietly murdered in the night.

6. i'm sure that little boots will only pardon him when its all said and done
but it sure is fun to read about gonzo needing the services of high priced lawyers. the bush supporters well of money will one day run out and this is just one of the avenues taken to that end. oh the sleepless nights sure do get long huh alberto

7. He was the best Bush* could find... why isn't he defending himself?
or at least joining up with that former Supreme Court "shue-in," Oh yeah, she's gotta defend herself against contempt of Congress. Boy, that Texas Bar Association has some really winners among its members.
