Impeaching Cheney & Bertrand Russell on "powerlessness of the individual" --
Edited on Thu Nov-15-07 10:26 AM by IndyOp
Sometimes I need a swift kick in the butt. I got one watching Tuesday's DemocracyNow!

Excerpt of a 1962 interview...

STUDS TERKEL: Why do people, the great majority of people the world over, feel as helpless as they do, they feel as impotent as they do? This seems to be in the air, I’m sure, all over the world, feeling that the individual, I, John Smith, John Doe, says, “I can’t do anything about it.”

BERTRAND RUSSELL: That’s just (inaudible). They can. I mean, an individual, if he has the pluck and the independence of mind, can do a very great deal. Actually, here we sit, no organization, none whatever, and simply by expressing an opinion which is known to be unbiased, an individual can effect a very great deal. And this powerlessness of the individual is a form of cowardice; it’s a pretense, an alibi for doing nothing. More Studs...

I've lately been thinking that the stance of many Democrats in Congress against impeaching Cheney comes from the fact that they feel powerless to act - powerless to make their colleagues take decisive action. I can imagine myself in that situation and feel the pressure toward the groupthink.

After reading Russell, as I realize that my own occasional sense of powerlessness is just an excuse for cowardice (and laziness), I more clearly see it in them and I very clearly see why we MUST lead the way. By overcoming our cowardice (sense of powerlessness) we will lead them to overcome theirs.

Three Charges in House Resolution 333

First Charge: Cheney has purposely manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and Congress of the United States by fabricating a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction to justify the use of the United States Armed Forces against the nation of Iraq in a manner damaging to our national security interests, to wit:

Second Charge: Cheney purposely manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and Congress of the United States about an alleged relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda in order to justify the use of the United States Armed Forces against the nation of Iraq in a manner damaging to our national security interests, to wit:

Third Charge: Cheney has openly threatened aggression against the Republic of Iran absent any real threat to the United States, and done so with the United States proven capability to carry out such threats, thus undermining the national security of the United States.

Additional Charges Not Contained in H Res 333
  • Cheney led a campaign of retribution against whistleblower Joseph Wilson, including the outing of a covert CIA operative.
  • Cheney led efforts to torture.
  • Cheney played a key role in setting up illegal spying programs.
  • Cheney led manipulation of pre-war intelligence.
  • Cheney created the secret Energy Task Force which operated in defiance of open-government laws.
  • Cheney's lawyer, David Addington, advocated the "Unitary Executive Theory" which is used by the White House to defy laws duly enacted by Congress and thereby justify dictatorial action.
  • Cheney directed massive no-bid contracts to his company, Halliburton, and profitted from the same illegal war he defrauded the American public to launch.

Robert Greenwald's video - IMPEACH DICK CHENEY

By the way, if you are going to make calls, Thom Hartmann says that Cheney pronounces his name "chee-knee." Dick apparently thinks it is funny when most people mispronounce his name "chain-ee" but he won't correct other people so that they can get it right. I think this behavior is symbolic of his elitism and that if people begin to pronounce his name correctly he will notice.

2. K an R.
As for Cheney's name, that's funny because I was friends with a family named Cheney and they pronounced it "Chay Knee". I think ol' Dick has adopted a pretentious affectation.

3. That's an interesting wrinkle. "Pretentious Affectation" fits Dick better than
any other moniker I can think of...
