It's difficult to believe that this will be news to anyone but the Bush strategy for 2008 is now becoming obvious: Stall 'em.
For the next year, you are likely to be facing legislative deadlock. Bush has already made it clear he's happy to "work with" the Democratic Congress. Lord help us all. When Bush says he'll "work with" anyone, what he means is, he'll tell them what to do, call them obstructionist if they don't do it and ignore anything they say. Any vaguely progressive legislation the Senate passes will be vetoed. They may or may not be some face-saving waffling about "fiscal responsibility", there will certainly be a lot of shouting about "far-left groups" (which includes about two-thirds of the country now). On the rare occasions the veto is overridden, Bush will work out some way of preventing it from being enforced. The War: Forget it. A pullout is not coming. Bush has committed himself to remaining in Iraq for, well, forever. Any measure Congress passes to end the war, see above. Veto and blame the Democrats. Like many children, Bush is pathologically incapable of accepting responsibility for anything. A Democratic president may or may not order a pullout on taking office but such is America's addiction to oil that I wouldn't count on it. Presidential Appointments: Here's some free advice for the Democrats: Block all of them. We're getting toward endgame now, when Bush has to either leave office or launch that coup that he and Cheney have been fantasising about. At this stage of the game, anyone nominated for any position is going to have been chosen specifically for their obediance. If they were capable of acting independantly, they wouldn't have been nominated.
