Richardson nominated for Nobel Prize
Richardson nominated for Nobel Prize
By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer
Thu Nov 15, 6:21 AM ET

WASHINGTON - Democrat Bill Richardson often touts his four Nobel Peace Prize nominations on the presidential campaign trail.

Now he has a fifth.

Democratic Rep. Bart Gordon of Tennessee said he has sent a nomination packet to the Nobel Committee in honor of Richardson's diplomatic efforts with countries like Sudan and North Korea.

"He's well deserving," said Gordon, who got to know Richardson when they served in Congress together. "It's just a continuation of his willingness to continue to go around the world, whether it's a matter of hostages or other tense situations, and work with all parties."

This year's Nobel prize winner also came from a background in presidential politics; former Vice President Al Gore shared the honor with six scientists for their work to raise awareness about global warming.

2. Nominations mean very little
Anyone can nominate anyone for a Nobel prize. Crimeny, * is a perennial nominee!

The real measure is: How many of those nominations have been acknolwedged by the Nobel committee?

3. It's a reflection of his diplomatic efforts
that's clear to anyone who has taken an honest look at his public service.

The nomination means a great deal.

4. Adolph Hitler was nominated for the Peace Prize. Stalin, Mussolini and George W, too
I am in no way comparing Bill Richardson to these men, please don't flame me. I am only underlining my point that a nomination, in and of itself, is meaningless.

5. His efforts are well known and his nomination must have the notice of the committee
much like Al Gore's first nominations did.

7. Actually, you are wrong. Not "anyone" can nominate anyone.
Wikipedia or google will give you the facts.

8. I realized that was wrong after I posted it
Unfortunately, it was too late to change it.

Yes, only select persons are allowed to submit a nomination. But I still stand by my statement that a nomination, by itself, has very little meaning. This should be obvious when looking at the list of past nominees.

9. Neo-cons: Richardson hurt himself for VP spot due to anti-war stance.
I heard this on one of the talking heads shows (Fox?) when one of the rightists was asked if Richardson would make a good running mate for Hillary. To paraphrase, the PermaWar commentator said Richardson has become less desirable because he is clearly anti Iraq War while Clinton has signed-on to one of the neocon's long-term objectives: permanent military presence in the Mid East.

11. What is strange- Just got a Richardson fundraising letter and inserted in it was a pamphlet that had
a reprint of William Kristol writing in favor of Bill Richardson... very weird reference to have...Wonder what the neo-cons like about him....that alone should make everyone wonder...

10. This is news???
What a joke....so he's got 4 nominations in his past...sounds like a losing record, not something to be touted. And in reality, anyone can be nominated, but in actuality the process is far more complicated than that and is done secretly, the Nobel committee will never confirm whose even being considered. Hell, technically any of us could have someone nominate us and we could issue a press release.

Ahh...I see the Pickler is involved here...wonder what her agenda is here... :eyes:
