Karl Rove Hired As Newsweek Contributor To ‘Balance’ Markos

Earlier this week, Newsweek announced that it is hiring DailyKos founder Markos Moulitsas as a contributor for the 2008 presidential campaign, offering occasional opinion pieces. Markos said, “Newsweek is ‘balancing’ me out with someone that should make heads on our side explode.”

Now we know who. Newsweek has announced it is hiring Karl Rove to become a Newsweek contributor. From a Newsweek press release:

“Newsweek has a long tradition of asking practitioners and opinion-makers to offer our readers the benefits of their experience in occasional opinion essays,” said Newsweek Editor Jon Meacham. “Whether one agrees or disagrees with Karl, there is no arguing that he has been a critical player in the political world with insights and experiences that we think will give our readers something unique.”

The right wing has been up in arms, claiming Markos’ hire is an example of liberal bias in the media. Last night on Hannity & Colmes, NPR’s Juan Williams claimed journalism is being hijacked by angry, offensive individuals making “extreme statements“:

All you’ve got to do is shout, say something on the blog that offends and attacks the other side, and suddenly, you have the credentials, and you’re said to be a journalist.

1. Copy editor: "What is it?"
Editor:"I'm not sure but he seems to have just blotted his massive forehead in an ink pad and randomly smashed it against some legal sized paper"

Copy editor:"Oh, well this makes three weeks in a row. You want me to.."

Editor:"Yeah call the ghost writer again"

That just a really stupid move, but hiring Rove is by far most offensive.

6. Markos is closer to being a journalist than Rove is
Edited on Thu Nov-15-07 02:58 PM by rocknation
Regardless of how you feel about his writing, Markos does have that job experience. Rove is just another recipient of affirmative action Rethug style. Also, is it fair and balanced since Rove is Bush's boyhood friend?

12. The comparison is truthfulness & accuracy. Has Markos ever lied on purpose like Rove has?
Whether the person has a reocrd of lying should be the standard.

14. I was looking at it purely as a job description but you're right

Does Rove have the credibility, integrity, and trustworthiness the job requires?

7. "there is no arguing that he has been a critical player..." *ahem*
"CRIMINAL" not "player"

I will not buy or read Newsweek as long as Rove is employed by them.

I knew I felt an evil presence here this morning. Figured it either had to be KKKarl, The Dick or Monkey Nuts.

10. Wasn't Rove subpoenaed? Why would they hire someone who's defying Congress?

11. "Liberal media" now means that you have to have one liar to "balance" anyone with factual info.
This has been the media's definition of "balance" for years.

If you have Al Franken telling the truth, then you have to "balance" that with Ann Coulter telling lies.

If you have an Al Gore type telling the truth, you have to "balance" that with some paid, minorty scientist lying about Global Warming.

etc, etc.

Note to media- I dont need "balance"- I need facts- and Rove is a proven liar.

15. Wow...
A blogger/journalist versus a professional liar who is going to be spending a lot of time in court defending his actions in the future.

Well done.

16. Newsweek Editor Jon Meacham: "Readers will have to decide if he's simply an apologist."
Newsweek Editor Jon Meacham:

"Readers will have to decide if he's simply an apologist."

Oliver Willis:

Of course he's an apologist. In Rove's diseased brain, George W. Bush is the greatest president ever - not the trainwreck president who Rove lost the election to Al Gore with, barely beat John Kerry and ended Republican control of both the House and the Senate.

Oh, and the war that has killed over 3,500 Americans for no good or honest reason.

Jane Hamsher:

Newsweek is hiring Karl Rove to be a spokesperson for the “right” to balance Markos of Daily Kos. As the man who took Bush’s approval rating from 88% to 25%, I think he’s a perfect.

And nice to know they’ll have someone “civil” to balance out those foul-mouthed bloggers:

Eventually, I met with Rove. I arrived at his office a few minutes early, just in time to witness the Rove Treatment, which, like LBJ’s famous browbeating style, is becoming legend but is seldom reported. Rove’s assistant, Susan Ralston, said he’d be just a minute. She’s very nice, witty and polite. Over her shoulder was a small back room where a few young men were toiling away. I squeezed into a chair near the open door to Rove’s modest chamber, my back against his doorframe.

Inside, Rove was talking to an aide about some political stratagem in some state that had gone awry and a political operative who had displeased him. I paid it no mind and reviewed a jotted list of questions I hoped to ask. But after a moment, it was like ignoring a tornado flinging parked cars. “We will fuck him. Do you hear me? We will fuck him. We will ruin him. Like no one has ever fucked him!” As a reporter, you get around—curse words, anger, passionate intensity are not notable events—but the ferocity, the bellicosity, the violent imputations were, well, shocking. This went on without a break for a minute or two. Then the aide slipped out looking a bit ashen, and Rove, his face ruddy from the exertions of the past few moments, looked at me and smiled a gentle, Clarence-the-Angel smile. “Come on in.”

What do you want, Newsweek hired Michael Gerson soon after he left the White House. Commitment to the truth doesn’t seem to be high on the agenda for their pundit qualifications.
