Speaking before the Sacramento Press Club Wednesday, former governor Grey Davis said living outside the public spotlight has given him new perspective on California's problems.
The man known for his controversial raising of car registration fees said he now knows voters have no appetite for tax hikes.
"There's a few sort of aging liberals that are happy to write larger checks and I think we should encourage that and send them thank you notes," Davis said. "But when you're in Sacramento, all the consultants tell you people want to pay more, but that's because they're in the bubble and they're not leading a real life."
Former California governor Pete Wilson also agrees.
"We engaged in tax increases (in 1991) that I hated," Wilson said at an event Monday. "It is not something you should think of as a ready solution, something that is easy to do."
