Kos at Newsweek: don't underestimate the significance of this
Edited on Thu Nov-15-07 03:20 PM by DFW
There is a reason Faux News is singing the Real Blues over this.

Up till now, the right wing money masters had pretty much
of a monopoly over the MSM and what they put out, with the
sole exception of some of the editorial board of the New York
times.

The taking on of Markos at Newsweek is important, because it finally
realizes that the voices of the Blogosphere are so listened to outside
the MSM that they are losing out on readership, and that means advertising
money. OK, it's STILL all about money, but it also means that the MSM thinks,
hopefully correctly, that there are enough of us out there to warrant paying
attention. Good. There ARE. Maybe John Amato and Jane Hamsher won't be far
behind, and Brad Friedman and Josh Marshall can replace Matt Drudge as the
"source" for breaking news we REALLY care about. DU won't be left out of the
quotables, either (are you listening, Nance?), if this becomes a trend.

If this were an unimportant blip on the radar, the extremist right wouldn't
be tearing their hair out over it on national television. After all they have
such a dominance of noisy hate shows, what should they care? Hannity, Savage,
Coulter, Limbaugh, the list of them on Faux and National Hate Radio is practically
endless. And yet, they go 101% ape shit when Markos is asked to do an occasional
(sheesh, not even weekly!) column in Newsweek?

I can only surmise that the loony toons right really and truly did consider the
whole of the progressive blogosphere a peripheral bunch of college kids and "tree
huggers." That would be like us thinking they were nothing more than beer guzzling
rednecks, instead of the vast network of moneyed interests along with religious
fanatics, corrupt business empires, and plain untold millions of fear-filled
"just folks" who really know no better, and really believe they are "conservative,"
instead of pitifully (and deliberately) misled. We know better. We always did.
They apparently did not. HELLO! Now they do, or they soon will. And if there are still
some out there who do not, their corporate masters are crying "wolf" (er, OK, make
that "Kos!") so loudly that those who don't yet know will soon know it in short order.

Not fair and balanced by a long shot, but it's the first shot. The longest journey,
as the saying goes............

1. Well, yeah--except that they hired Karl Rove, too
in the interest of fairness and balance.

4. Yeah, well, the nut cases won't be whining about Rove for sure
Edited on Thu Nov-15-07 03:45 PM by DFW
But even so, we all know who Rove is and what he's about.
Rove would be just one more hate writer from the right.
Markos would be the FIRST progressive from the blogosphere
to appear in a publication like that. This is not about how
many Roves they have. We all know that. This is about a
break--both in the monotony AND the monopoly.

Who cares if the loonies have 50 or if they have 60 of their
ranks out there spewing their garbage. They went ape shit over
our having ONE. That says something about how they feel--both
about the quality of their own writers (not too great if they
go nuts over one against ALL of their people), and over the fact
that we have finally gotten a foot (even a toe) in the door.
It's a start--one we didn't have up to now. The reaction from
the loonies on the other side tells me they don't think it's
small potatoes. Rather than ignore this, I want to push for more
progressives in the MSM. Even if you hate Newsweek yourself, don't
let this chance slide. Write letters of encouragement every time his
column appears there. Not because you're swallowing your pride, but
because the money interests that run this world will see that Markos
brings in readers (=money) and that progressives are good business,
too. If Nance Greggs ends up having her regular column in Newsweek,
too, it'll be because Markos generated good business as their progressive
guinea pig. It's our shot. I say go for it!
