Giuliani Is Such A Sleazy Sh*t...

Giuliani Exploits 9/11, Claims Attacks Inspired Him To Run For President

In a new interview with ABC News, Rudy Giuliani states that he decided to run for president after 9/11, “while leading through the crisis”:

Toward the end of his 7½ year tenure as mayor, New York City was attacked by terrorists on Sept. 11, 2001. At some point while leading the city through the crisis, he decided he wanted to be president.

During the crisis, he realized just how much his term as mayor had prepared him for catastrophe. “I remember having this sense that I can do this. You know, I’m not going to do it perfectly. I’m going to make a certain number of mistakes. But maybe in some ways, it’s fortunate I’ve been mayor for 7½ years.”

Giuliani has constructed a grand narrative about how 9/11 not only changed the country, but also his outlook on the world and his political ambitions. He even invoked 9/11 to explain why he rudely answered his cell phone while giving a speech to the National Rifle Association.

But Giuliani was considering running for president long before 9/11. According to a Nov. 20, 1998 New York Daily News article, Giuliani was thinking about running for president in 2000:

Mayor Giuliani yesterday pledged he won’t wait until “the final hour” as former Gov. Mario Cuomo did to decide if he’ll launch a White House run.

Offering the first tiny clue to his timetable, the mayor said he will decide “sometime next year” if he’ll vie for President or senator or bow out of the political fray altogether ... Asked when he’d make up his mind, Giuliani said, “Sometime next year we’ll focus on what happens to me in the future, whether I decide to be a candidate and for what.“

4. Has anyone ever seen a list of what Rudy DID after 9-11 that makes him
so great? I haven't. I don't remember him doing anything but give speeches. I'm on the other side of the country, so maybe I missed a lot, but I just don't remember him responding in a way that was so outstanding. I want a list!

7. That's not it. But I was there so I'll tell you.
He kept us calm, focused, and sane. We didn't know what was best to do. He said "Give blood." You had to be there to see the people pouring out of the buildings to stand on the blood lines (we were expecting horribly injured survivors).

He refused to let us go for revenge, unlike the idiot in the White House who started screaming War! immediately.

He kept us informed, as accurately as possible, about the death toll. About where to go for information.

He gave us things to do to help. We wanted to help so much. There was nothing worse than feeling useless.

He told us to go to the funerals of our firefighters and cops. My mom, who wouldn't use him for toilet paper, went to those funerals because he told her to.

He was covered in the dust of the dead like the others streaming out of downtown. He was in shock like the rest of us. But he kept working. Because that's what you do. We found out with him that, after horror, if you're still alive you keep living.

Now we know that there was more to be done that wasn't. At the time, HOWEVER, Rudy Giuliani took charge when our national leadership was absent, and Rudy was rational when our president was only thinking about how NOW he could go to war and get his Patriot Act. Rudy's rationality, however, might well have been a product of shock. A building fell on him. He got divorced, fought cancer, and a big building fell on him in one year. That's a lot. And he couldn't hide in his apartment like I did because he was the guy everyone was asking for answers. So he kept going. But then he couldn't stop. People get upset about Rudy wanting to remain Mayor, but they don't take into account the way people were dealing back then. He couldn't stop. He didn't know what he'd do if he had to stop. Because, even though he's a sucky human being, he IS a human being and a big building fell on him. And he was untouched. And that freaks a person out.

Just like much better and more decent people, Rudy needed to find some grand reason why he was still breathing. Some would spend their lives working for charities. Rudy decided it meant he should rule the world.

Had he worked to ensure the health and safety of our first responders, I would still be giving him a free pass. But he didn't. They hate his guts and I stand with them, the heroes.

12. Speaking as someone who was across the street from the WTC on 9/11
Rudy's claims of heroism are false. There was no coordination and no plan that day. Traffic was completely gridlocked preventing relief workers from getting down to the site. Everything was screwed up for hours.

The problem was that Rudy insisted on placing the city's Emergency Command Center in WTC 7 when everyone recommended that it be placed in Brooklyn. So when the towers fell the Command Center was destroyed and there was no one to manage the police, firefighters and other relief workers. In other words there was no leadership when we needed it the most.

Why did Rudy put the Command Center in the WTC when everyone advised him not to. Because it had an apartment where Rudy could have is affairs. He put my life and the lives of thousands of New Yorkers in danger so he could get laid.

14. from what I've heard from friends in NY, they weren't that impressed.
I think the "america's mayor" bullshit was a media job, and a precursor to this run. He's sleazeball extraordinaire!

oh and thanks for writing something about a REpublican candidate.. I'm tiring of the Senator Clinton bashing. Nice to see things about the people we're really running against.

10. He tried to invalidate the mayoral election
From a reader at Talking Points Memo:

Of all the things in Giuliani's past and present I find frightening was his suggestion in the fall of 2001 that the mayoral election be postponed or its result disregarded. And he proposed doing this with the simple agreement of the candidates. This is not someone who understands what a republic is, let alone a democracy. I keep waiting for one of his critics to point this out as an astonishing disqualifier for the presidency.
