The only real Democrat in Pakistan has beenlocked up

This is fugging madness
<snip>

Former cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan could get the death penalty after being charged with violating Pakistan’s anti-terror laws.

According to the Daily Mail, Imran was charged under Pakistan's Anti-Terrorism Act on Wednesday night and is expected to be held in detention for several days before initially being returned to house arrest.

No details of the specific charges were given, but offences under the Act can result in the death sentence or life imprisonment.

Police official Aftab Cheema said: "He created a law and order situation... and caused a disruption in educational activities. "

The Pakistani leader was arrested while addressing students at Lahore's Punjab University on Wednesday.

True the source is the Daily Mail but this is unbelievable. Big mistake Mushie.

3. yep. he's the only widely known and respected democratic

6. He is too well connected not to survive
Oxford U and his ex wife Jemima who just happens to be Lord Goldsmith's daughter. Still she is worried.

She said: "I am worried, we are all worried. This is just one more sign that Musharraf has become one of Pakistan's most brutal and oppressive dictators ever."

"Musharraf seems to be so unpredictable and imperious to international pressure. I am worried what he will do next.

Ms Khan said she was currently in talks to stage another London demonstration against Musharraf's regime and was keen to keep public attention on the situation in Pakistan.

She said: "I never usually talk to press, but I am talking to press just to keep the focus on what Musharraf is doing in Pakistan."

"I want to keep up the pressure and highlight that the people affected by this are from all walks of life. It is teachers, lawyers, students, journalists - these people have been targeted while known terrorists are on the loose and have not been put on trial despite Musharraf's words."

5. I was concerned for Pakistan because Bhutto (who many look to as the
savior from Musharraf) had plenty of her own evil deeds when she was Prime Minister.

I wasn't even aware of this individual - and strongly hope that those in OUR government do something about this. If we TRULY want what's best for Pakistan, we need to act.

(Just a guess - Condi has never heard of this person, either.)

7. He's the leader of a minor party.
Something like one MP. Put under house arrest yesterday. "House arrest" is Musharraf-speak for, "He's going to get involved in a demonstration, this would lead to violence and bad PR, so let's nip it in the bud." He escaped, and was arrested today.

He's an Islamist, of sorts, and his party--Tehrik-something-or-other--was affiliated with JI, a dominant mainstream Islamic party. He ventured onto the campus of University of Punjab to give a talk or something, and the student wing of JI took him, beat him, imprisoned him, and turned him over to the police, saying that it was their campus, and he (or any other politician) wasn't allowed.

Embarrassed the JI to death, that did. U. Punjab came in for some criticism, ducked all responsibility--invited by students, kidnapped/beaten by students, police called by students, and pitched into a police van on the border of campus by students.

Ex soccer player. "Democrat", sure, most mainstream Islamist parties in Pakistan are. But not really liberal, like Bhutto's party. His part must differ from JI, but I'm not sure how. Calling for Musharraf to be overthrown was probably a bad move, all things considered, under emergency rule plus. Now he's facing terrorism charges. Not exactly what you call "gooooooooooal" over.

On the other hand, the papers are reporting this--and his call for overthrowing Musharraf. As far as print censorship goes, Musharraf's doing a horrible job.
