State Dept drops plan to force diplomats to Iraq.

Last month, the State Department announced that it would order “U.S. diplomats to take posts in Iraq next year” in “forced assignments.” The announcement was met with “anger and frustration” by several hundred diplomats. The AP reports that the State Department has now dropped the plan because “volunteers have filled all 48 vacant positions.” :eyes:

1. "Volunteers", Huh?

I wonder what kind of pressure the State Department exerted on members of the Foreign Service to get 48 to "volunteer" to go to Baghdad.

I would bet that they were threatened with all sorts of things.

None of the "volunteers" did so voluntarily, I'd bet.

2. I'd be surprised if they even got volunteers; I think they just didn't

want the bad publicity, so they flowered up a stink bomb.
