Cafeteria Worker Fired After GOP Congressman Got Grilled -- Not Toasted -- Sandwich
By Betsy Rothstein
November 15, 2007

House Administration Committee Chairman Robert Brady (D-Pa.) is fuming after a cafeteria worker in the Capitol lost his job days after Rep. Mark Souder (R-Ind.) left the establishment in a huff because his sandwich was grilled, not toasted.

Kennison Battle, better known as “Mohammed,” was fired this week following the Souder incident. However, it is unclear if Battle’s termination and Souder’s stormy exit last week are related.

Regardless, Brady — who has jurisdiction over Capitol Hill campus issues — has been trying to get Battle his old job back.

“It’s ridiculous,” Brady said Wednesday. “Big guys gotta bother the little guys? What the hell is the matter with them? I don’t think he deserved to get fired. … It’s a shame.”

Brady spoke with Nicole Hall, the café manager, who told him she didn’t want to fire Battle, but was forced to.

“She was upset she had to fire him,” Brady said. When Brady asked to speak with David Anderson — Hall’s superior — Anderson declined to discuss the matter.

Brady subsequently approached House Chief Administrative Officer Dan Beard about the firing and is awaiting a response.

Battle’s former colleagues said he was well-liked.

“He seemed to be a pretty good gentleman,” said James Gaylor, a temporary sandwich and dessert maker at the café. “I knew him for four days.”

A female café employee who spoke anonymously said she knows that “Battle was a good employee” who “talks well with the customers.”

2. This makes sense.
A Republican's sandwich is worth far more than a lower-class employee's job. When you want a toasted sandwich, you want a toasted sandwich. Grilled just won't do.

I remember last week, I went to Burger King and ordered two Whopper Juniors with no mayo and ketchup but extra onions. Well, I don't know what kind of crazy world that employee lived in, but he thought "extra" meant "the exact same amount I always get." I can tell you right now I went back, pulled him out through the drive-through window, and threw him down to the ground. "You're fired," I said. That's right. I fired him myself, and I'm not even his manager.

So I understand Souder's response. It's really quite reasonable.

Seems to me, the congressman needs to bypass the sandwiches altogether and try the salad. Maybe then his skin would clear up.

43. Oh, but nothing's too good for Mr. Souder! Who wouldn't die to wait hand and foot on this prince?

Souder!

Republicans' physical beauty and unbelievable charisma are only shadows of the glory of their other-worldly brilliance. Any of us should only be lucky enough to wait hand and foot on one of these gods!

The fired employee will remember his moment of closeness to greatness the rest of his life. Maybe he can send him a thank you note for the priviledge of serving him, and a letter of apology that he didn't serve him well enough, after which time he can take his own life.

Maybe he can arrange to step out in front of former South Dakota Republican Congressman Bill Janklow's Cadillac as he speeds past, just like the dead motorcyclist.

Gee, it would be an honor to be hit by Bill Janklow!

sandwiches.

Besides, it's only natural they gravitate toward toast because they are what they eat.

Who knew that their casual dislike for the American People would turn out to be a full-fledged disgust not just for the noisy peasants but for the Founding Fathers and the liberal-fairy-dreams of letting the stupid peasants have a say in ANYTHING?

36. I'm not surprised at all, after seven years of doing whatever they wanted
to whomever they wanted, why would anyone be shocked? It's well known by now the little people matter not at all.

Alot of those in DC, money ones are no different than Brady, its expected, I'm surprised he even recalled who gave him the sandwhich.

Many such as Brady honestly believe themselves above what they believe to be commoners and don't expect to have to repeat instructions twice, I am sure that is why he was so upset, I have seen waiters, bellhops and the like completely ignored by some in DC after having done service for certain individuals, no thank you no nothing, not even a look goodbye, no acknowledgement whatsoever that they were there for anything more than serving their masters, and not just in DC and not just by a politician.

I never had a desire to run in such hypocritical circles, the DC political arena is a mishmosh of wannabe's and kiss asses and its really sad and depressing to watch sometimes and to see human compassion at it's lowest form, I have made people mad by letting them know their actions were incomprehensible and they were no better than the cleaning maid who is more likely a better person and more honest, they looked at me like I was high or something to even suggest they should say thank you for a service they paid for or suggest they were similar in any way, kind of funny and sad at the same time, who raised these people?

42. All joking aside, this is not right.
A person shouldn't lose their job over a mistake in a sandwich order. Now, maybe if he said something like "Here's your MF sandwich, Pie Face," but there's no indication of that type of behavior. I think we need to email the leaders of the House and ask them what kind of infantile individuals they have on board. I don't want people who have hissy fits over sandwiches making important decisions affecting the nation.
